It's OVER 5,000!
I'd rather have Schlosser than Varvaro.
Me too.

Varvaro has been excellent the past 2 seasons.
He did fairly well last year. xFIP of 4.19 in 2013, when his K/9 was 5.28 against a BB/9 of 3.07.

I don't know how you could possibly take that stance. What is the salary difference between what Varvaro is slated to make (he's not eligible for arbitration) and Schlosser at next to league minimum? Probably $400,000 at most. I'll gladly pay the $400,000 and have a guy who might be able to pitch in a semi-serious situation instead of a human batting tee.
I would base my case mainly on his having fairly pronounced splits and his ability to induce ground balls. He is not as good an overall pitcher as Varvaro. But used as a specialist, I think he would have more value.
Cory Gearrin 2.0
Hart on surprising Schlosser move: "We think very highly of Gus as a pitcher, and he's capable of being a mainstay in some capacity on a MLB roster, but unfortunately our roster is a game of numbers, and he was on the wrong roster at the right time, therefore a tough decesion needed to be made regarding his future, and our assumption is going forward there was not a fit going forward."

Therein lies the problem, though. You can't have a lot of these guys in the pen at one given time, and we even got lefties that can get righties out so that negates some of somebody with Schlossers ability, the way the pen is currently and will be constructed it's probably more important to have a guy that can go multiple innings that a guy that occasionally can come in to get a tough right handed hitter out and induce a ground ball double play ala Gryboski, Moylan, Gearrin, etc.
And second, we have a manager that doesn't know how to utilize guys like these and put them in positions to succeed.

Yeah. 50 can tell about my irrationally high regard for Gearrin.

Rangers non-tender Alexi Ogando... he is another arm that I would take a chance on. Bullpen piece capable of giving you multiple innings, sort of like how Carpenter was used when first brought up in 2013.
