Medlen, Beachy, Schlosser non-tendered

I'd rather have Schlosser than Varvaro.

I don't know how you could possibly take that stance. What is the salary difference between what Varvaro is slated to make (he's not eligible for arbitration) and Schlosser at next to league minimum? Probably $400,000 at most. I'll gladly pay the $400,000 and have a guy who might be able to pitch in a semi-serious situation instead of a human batting tee.

He had a very good first half of 2014. But I think his second half performance is a much better reflection of what we can expect from him if everything goes right.

I would base my case mainly on his having fairly pronounced splits and his ability to induce ground balls. He is not as good an overall pitcher as Varvaro. But used as a specialist, I think he would have more value. I think a good ROOGY is potentially quite valuable given that there are more right-handed hitters out there. Peter Moylan showed that.

Cory Gearrin 2.0

Rangers non-tender Alexi Ogando... he is another arm that I would take a chance on. Bullpen piece capable of giving you multiple innings, sort of like how Carpenter was used when first brought up in 2013.

Hart on surprising Schlosser move: "We think very highly of Gus as a pitcher, and he's capable of being a mainstay in some capacity on a MLB roster, but unfortunately our roster is a game of numbers, and he was on the wrong roster at the right time, therefore a tough decesion needed to be made regarding his future, and our assumption is going forward there was not a fit going forward."

I hope they are making the right call on guys like Cunniff and Gil. Btw I think Northcraft has some similar qualities to Schlosser. Strong platoon split, groundball specialist. But he throws harder than Schlosser. So I will have to make Northcraft the next object of my ROOGY infatuation now that they have taken Gearrin and Schlosser from me. I suppose Ryne Harper could do as well. He's another possible ROOGY.

Therein lies the problem, though. You can't have a lot of these guys in the pen at one given time, and we even got lefties that can get righties out so that negates some of somebody with Schlossers ability, the way the pen is currently and will be constructed it's probably more important to have a guy that can go multiple innings that a guy that occasionally can come in to get a tough right handed hitter out and induce a ground ball double play ala Gryboski, Moylan, Gearrin, etc.

And second, we have a manager that doesn't know how to utilize guys like these and put them in positions to succeed.

Yeah. You can only have one or two specialists. The rest of the pen needs to be more versatile.

My take as well. Thanks for saving me the time. :)

Yeah. 50 can tell about my irrationally high regard for Gearrin.

I don't have to tell you how much I liked Gearrin before Fredi abused him and he turned bad (he was already hurting by then I believe) and then you know how that ended.

True, I cannot argue with you here at all. Not that your other point was wrong, I agree with it too. I just don't think it really goes against the point nsacpi was making. But I'll grant our manager surely does.

On a different note, I don't think it is fully appreciated how much the premature loss of Beachy and Medlen set back this franchise. It set in train a set of events that basically removed any flexibility to improve the club last year mid-season and opened up two giant holes in the rotation heading into 2015. A case could be made that Heyward would still be with us if Beachy and Medlen hadn't blown out their elbows.

When Moylan first came up, he had some giddy-up on his fastball that Schlosser just doesn't have.

I would take a flyer on Alexi too, before this past season he was solid. He could be another solid buy low bounce-back candidate.
