Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

The #Braves now are packaging OF Justin Upton and 3B Kelly Johnson in trade talks with teams.

Obviously, I think he means Chris

God I hate that signing so much. It was so pointless and now we might have to sacrifice some Uptons value to get him off the team.

I wonder who the Braves have in mind to slot in at 3B if they are able to move CJ? Assuming that piece doesn't come in the trade itself.

The sad thing is if not for that contract I would be all for keeping Johnson just to see if he can get back to his career averages.

Was wondering this too. Hopefully we aren't the mystery team that has a standing offer to Headley for 4/60.

Wonder how they FO views Kubitza? Gotta figure he's knocking on the door.

Good question. They think enough of him to put him on the 40-man. He's moved up level-by-level and they haven't rushed him. I've read mixed reports on his defense. He walks a ton, Ks a ton, and hasn't hit for much power (and he's a pretty big guy). Would be nice to have a LH stick. He may project as a solid bench guy, but we won't know that until he faces big league pitching consistently. It will be interesting to watch him in spring training.

Also 21 steals in 27 attempts. So some value on the basepaths. On defense his arm rates as one of the best at the position, but he's been doing some extra work to improve on his footwork, which apparently leaves something to be desired. He also has tended to hit lefties as well as righties. He does have some power, but more of the doubles variety. 31 doubles, 11 triples and 8 HRs last season. The triples provide confirmation that he has good wheels.

Intriguing. Doubles tend to turn into homers for some guys as they grow up. Glad to hear he's working. Falls under the category of controlling what you can control.

I've always felt that Kubitza was a better prospect than La Stella. For a variety of reasons. Tools. Age at which he played each level. The main issue with Kubitza is the strikeouts. If he holds it at 25% and is also able to sustain the walks and extra base power, he will be a major league regular. If the strikeout rate blows up to 30% or higher and the walks edge down, he is a bench player.

I think the issue the Braves see is that he is grown up. He may be able to generate more HR power as he gains experience. The contact rate scares me, but I think he'll get his shot.

Now THIS opens up a ton of interesting possibilities. Suddenly Headley is no longer a pipe dream, but not for 4/65!

The only problem I see with packaging Johnson with Upton is who needs both other than San Francisco???

There would definitely have to be a third team involved since SF definitely doesn't appear to have the pieces to get Justin alone.

Word was that Dayton was kicking the tires...wonder if this news could lead to a J-Up/Johnson for Moustakas, Finnegan, ???
