Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

Do we really want Joe Panik? The numbers he put up this year in SF were spearheaded by a hollow batting average, just like he's done in the minors. In fact, he really don't do anything good, and he's already 24.

That was my point in saying that I understand Hart waiting everyone out - if he's willing to take Crick (who many think will never gain enough command and control over his great stuff other than to make him a potential late-inning guy) and Panik (who we already traded away when we moved La Stella for Vizcaino) - doesn't it make sense to either continue trying to get a better return OR get someone to also take Johnson in the deal even if we don't get any added value for Johnson?

He's likely going to be able to get that kind of deal whenever he wants it, so what's the harm in waiting to see if someone gets hurt or another GM (Jack Z or Duquette) finally decides he's willing to stand on the gas pedal to try to separate themselves and give him what he's looking for?

It is sounding more like Oakland because Texas has reportedly only shown interest in Upton to flip him (three-team trade) and prefer Gattis. Plus Oakland must be planning to move some of all their pitching. If it is Oakland I'd be interested in a package headlined by Jarrod Parker, I know he is coming off his SECOND Tommy John but he should be ready early on based on when he started throwing.

If it wasn't for that part I added in bold I'd love the idea. Given that this was Parker's second TJ surgery, wouldn't everyone have just as soon given Medlen the same deal Dayton did???

If Parker is, in fact, on his second TJ surgery... no THANKS. The success rate is under 50% for pitchers coming back from number 2. Agreed we should have just kept Medlen if this was the plan.

I think Wren is playing the Rangers and Mariners against each other. If Seattle adds Justin they can start printing NLDS tickets. Maybe they add more just to keep him from going to the other team. I think it's going to be the Rangers.

I'm glad I'm not the only poster who makes mistakes...:)

As Seattle is printing those NLDS tickets, maybe they can talk to Wren about printing ALDS tickets for the Braves...

Adding second source . . .

@JonHeymanCBS
braves now in serious talks involving justin upton with unknown team as @JeffPassan said

Sad to see UPton go. I wish we could have worked out a long term extension with him but i understand why the front office is going this route.

I wish him the best of luck. I think he is going to have a borderline HOF career.

On Justin Upton: Not #Rangers. Not #Athletics. Cannot rule out #Padres. @jeffpassan said close.

Early indication is that J-Up is not going to the A's, Mariners or Rangers. Sounds like the Padres are still a possibility
