Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

Dustin Peterson: Potentially everyday regular. Some scouts see him as better fit at 2B than 3B. Solid power for a teenager. + Bat Speed

I don't think Hart could have made a trade that satisfied the majority of the posters on this board which I find to be a shame.

If they determined that they could not extend these guys then you need to restock for the future.

Jace Pederson is a v. good get for the Braves. That package ends up being an awful lot for 1 year of Justin Upton & still miss the playoffs.

I think people are seriously over reacting because they were expecting a top 10 prospect like Walker from Seattle. It was just wasn't happening. Why would a team give up a top 10 prospect for a 1 year rental? The question should be is the haul we got from San Diego better than the comp pick we would have got from Justin? Have to say it is.

Yeah. I'd rather have extent Justin, but this is probably better value than 1 year of Justin + pick.

Doesn't mean I'm not pissy about it, though.

To me it seems like Hart doesn't have a plan. Want to gut the team and rebuild for the future? Do it. Get the best talent you can for Heyward and Justin. I don't think that was the case in either trade. Why sign Markakis for 4 years? That's likely dead money the last year or two that could have been better used in getting BJ off the team. Just a lot of odd moves when looking at the big picture.

Seems like a bunch of talent evaulators have complimented the players coming over. I suppose the posters on here know better. I'll give it a couple of years before I make my determination.

Well Jace gets on base at a very strong clip and that low level kid had a solid season last year as well.

He was in the PCL last year; take those stats with a grain of salt.

That said, he's always shown a good BB/K. He could definitely be a useful guy. Don't like how much the SB's dropped off this year, though.

It was only one season ago we were coming off consecutive playoff appearances, the defending champ, locked up a huge part of our core and rated by ESPN as the number one team best positioned for the next decade.

I really defer to other people on this trade grade as I know nothing about these players but rebuilding aside - I am just incredibly baffled by the Markakis signing - In what world where you completely cripple your roster do you then sign a long term deal to a declining player you know is about to have surgery. That should have been a one year deal to any plug outfielder to just get through the season.

mallex smith nice pickup for braves. averaged 76 SBs last 2 years. .300 plus. also from northern florida (close to Ga)

I would agree with this. However another option would have been to wait at the deadline. Teams in the hunt can sometimes make dumb deals if they think it pushes them over the top.

Markakis cost nothing but money and not a lot considering where salaries are headed in th efuture.

I think Hart is clearly building for the future while staying relatively relevant in the present. What was he supposed to do to fill RF? Play a scrub and we lose 100 games?

I think the haul we got for Justin/Jason is good. Sounds like a lot of intriguing talents. Braves are always able to target young players and develop them. I'll trust the system unti lthe system fails.

People quit using the word "extent" when you mean EXTEND!
People may look at the trade made and not see as much as they thought they should see, but our minor league system just got better with decent prospects. Our minor league system was pretty much devoid of talent.

With more future money due to the MLB TV deal and a new stadium. No way we can't lock up one of Heyward or Upton. Or so we thought. What a difference this offseason is from last. Just pathetic really.
