Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

Are we done dealing?

I know the Upton and Heyward deals scream re-build, but we also just freed up $14.5 million. Hart promised that we would be relevant this year. I know it's a rebuild, but we obviously signed Markakias for some reason. Would we go buy a free-agent starter, and pray that the pitching is dominant enough to get to the playoffs?

A rotation of Teheran, Miller, Minor, Wood, and what free agent starting pitcher would give us a chance to be relevant?

TJ hurts any players value, marginally though. The success rate these days has to be considered close to the 90th percentile. So although it's a risk, it's not much of one.

Maybe we can trade for Justin in July? Pads should be out of it by then.

That's the success rate for guys returning to pitch. What is the success rate in guys actually able to pitch as well after as they did before (and without another injury)

Not a great return--makes the Heyward deal look very good--but I like Fried. Of course, he might never make it back from his injury, so...

Hart:

"Look, 2 things in play here. Look, anytime you have an opportunity to acquire a pitcher with high upside that has had Tommy John surgery, you have to do it, because, look, it ensures almost completely that they will come back healthier, stronger, and better than before, and look you don't have to worry about the potential for them to have to go under the knife in the future. Look, the other thing in play here is, when you look at it, we need speed. Look, we feel as an organization we need to upgrade athletically and especially speed. Look, look at the Kansas City Royals, they ran themselves to almost the World Series. As it is, it's not as important to look at the ability of one player to posses the skills to get on base, but more so the ability to look and see the potential to get on base and move forward and quickly and touch home base without, look the ability to hit the ball out of the ballpark. Look, that's what we've gotten, that's what he have done, and look that's where we are going forward as an organization."

I'm in full agreement. I love that we are getting back to a more athletic brand of baseball,

To me it seems like Hart doesn't have a plan. Want to gut the team and rebuild for the future? Do it. Get the best talent you can for Heyward and Justin. I don't think that was the case in either trade. Why sign Markakis for 4 years? That's likely dead money the last year or two that could have been better used in getting BJ off the team. Just a lot of odd moves when looking at the big picture.

Sure he does. Rebuild, but cleverly tell everybody he's retooling, not rebuilding, so no one knows.

What I don't get about Fried with some of you guys is that if he never had surgery he wouldn't have been available. Had to take a chance.

BenBadler

Good chance the 2016 draft pick the Padres can get when Justin Upton leaves ends up better than any of the prospects they traded to Atlanta

Ouch. We got a bunch of spare parts.

Fried is a legit TOR arm.

Eh... I mean, potentially, yeah, sure. But he is a dude in A ball coming back from surgery; he is anything but a sound bet at this point.

Eh, exactly. Not overly impressed...Minor gets hammered on this board for not being a top of the rotation pitcher, albeit a quality arm that has had some good seasons and is a nice guy to have in the middle of the rotation....the only problem with this is I don't believe Fried has the upside to be as good as Minor is/has been....and that's disturbing.

Can't defend this one. Needless to say I won't be buying the MLB package this season. It's really tough to support this team now.

I just caught up in the thread and you went from being unhappy about the trade to defending it. What changed?

No, seriously, you are wrong. Fried and J. Peterson are each individually worth more than a comp round pick.

I don't agree with Peterson at all. I could see Fried, who certainly has more talent than any comp pick, but now has some *mediocre* results in the minors(albeit at a young age) and coming off Tommy John.

Combined you are probably right, but you also miss out of a year of Upton, which apparently means nothing.
