Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

One AL exec's reaction to A.J. Preller's moves: "Exactly what the Padres needed."

must not think OF defense matters in a gigantic ballpark that eats power hitters. I don't think any of those 3 guys they just traded for can play CF and none of them are good at RF either.

I suppose I'm in the minority but I like this trade. Going into the offseason out minor league system was one of the worst in baseball. Now it looks pretty good.

I like the concept of trading guys you won't be able to sign for a bevy of prospects. But you just can't tell how good they'll turn out to be. But we need to spend the money we're saving on JUp, this team still has a bunch of holes. They better not be done.

The problem with Peterson (if you want to put him at 3B) is his lack of power. His bat may play at SS with his solid defense, but do you really want that bat at 3B?

I know what his numbers look like in the minors, but he's at an advanced age and playing in a hitters league.

He's an interesting prospect because he's a good athlete, but there is nothing about him that screams anything other than possible starter at SS or utility guy. What makes him significantly better than Pastor?

I would say that bat projects a bit better than Pastor, as well as his defense. But all in all, I'd say he isn't significantly better than Pastor is/was projected to be. But Pastor hasn't exactly panned out so far due. So comparing him to a failed prospect is a little unfair. Pastor had a decent bit of upside at one point as well. And I still think Pastor could be a decent utility player if he could stay healthy.

At 3b, I don't think he profiles all that well. But I think at 2B, he could be quite valuable if the bat sticks. Could always move Peraza to CF.

I disagree that Fried will "come fast." He lacked a lot of polish before he got hurt; essentially, I see his absolute best case time table as this:

2015: out all year

2016: split between A+/AA (this is optimistic for a recovery year with a guy who hasn't pitched above Low-A)

2017: AA/AAA

2018: AAA/MLB

So we are talking about a dude who is gonna be useful 4 years down the road, if at all.

I'm happy to have him, but we should be realistic here.

Braves might be thinking Fried can regain his full trade value pre injury by the 16/17 offseason when Hart will be looking to buy. Not just about when he'll be MLB ready.

Spend the money on what, exactly? The only decent option I see left is Aoki, and while he would have been a nice piece to patch into the club before the Heyward/JUp trades, he sure as hell isn't going to make any difference now.

Let me put it this way...

The Braves will have a top 5 pick in the next draft.

I hope so, and although there isn't any certainty that a top pick is going to be or become a superstar, I'd like to take my changes at finding the next franchise type player.

Could get a pitcher.....Shields?

If the braves have a top 5 pick it's protected so they could be more aggressive with FAs.

FYI from the KLaw write up:
This is a far, far better return than waiting for a compensatory draft pick in 2016 for Upton, when they wouldn't have gotten a player as good as a healthy Fried.

Gotta make you wonder what our plan is for the infield. My guess is they would want to give Jace a long look this year. Maybe start him at 2B and platoon CJ/Callaspo at 3B? Just curious what the long term plan is with Jace/simmons/peraza.

Still don't see us ranking highly with our current system.

I'd say it's top 10 now after this trade for sure. In no order, Peraza, Sims, Jenkins, Fried, Bethancourt, Peterson, Davidson, Hursh, Smith, Albies, Kubitza.

Currently 4 top 100 prospects. At least 3 others that could be on the cusp of bring top 100 with a good 2014.
