GDT: 7-30-13 Rockies at Braves, Wood pitching, JHey lead-off

Wood impressed me tonight. I missed the first two innings but he sure did pitch great when I saw him!

In the category of Dumb Things the Homer Rockies Announcers Say: (After Simmons relay throw to the plate). "Yeah, Simmons is right there with Tulo. Tulo WILL win the Gold Glove this season with only 3 errors, but Simmons is right there."

If Simmons doesn't win the GG they might as well stop giving out that award.

The thing Simmons has against him is Tulowitzski, While Simmons is the best defensive SS in baseball Tulo is number 2. Tulo is also pretty much the best offensive SS. Don't be too bummed out if Simmons doesn't win the GG this year. Druw didn't win a GG in 97 despite amassing the highest Total Zone in baseball in his split time between CF and RF.

I think there has been so much written about Trons defense that even the writers couldn't mess this up.

Simmons is a monster out there. He is so quick with his reactions and gets to his feet as fast as anyone I have seen. It doesn't hurt that he throws gas from SS. I always thought Furcal had one of the better arms from SS I had ever seen. Anyone have any idea how they compare?

I think Furcal had a stronger arm but obviously simmons is a wizard with his glove and with his body control.

I would like to think that they couldn't. But again, Druw didn't win it his first year despite being the best defender in baseball with less innings than anyone else. If next year rolls around and he hasn't won then we have an issue. I mean freaking Andre Ethier won a Gold Glove, the award's been a joke for years.

BTW Zito....is being arguably the best defensive SS in the minor leagues worth anything?

Correct it still doesn't mean anything. Defending in the majors and minors are different beasts. Looking like a man amongst boys is easier then looking like a man amongst men.

Love how you can never admit you were wrong.

It obviously wasn't a difference for Simmons.

Sabermetrics wasn't as big then as it was now. I think everyone aside from the homers of a team think that Simmons is the best defesnive short stop in the game and arguably the best since Ozzie.

Simmons should win it. Don't get me wrong. I just know that many great defensive seasons have gone unnoticed. Just last year Bourn didn't win a GG, Rollins has won many GG despite pretty much every season while in the NL he was outclassed by Hardy and Ryan. Joey Votto only has one gold glove. That's bonkers. Some how LaRoche managed to beat Votto last year. Baffling.

It wasn't, same with Heyward. But it easily could have been. CarGo was arguably the best defensive CF in the minors coming up, now he plays LF. Could keep going on but I won't, my point is pretty obvious, looking great against lesser competition doesn't always mean amazing. If Simmons didn't defend so far above average he'd be very meh. If he was Kozma his value would be much lower.

May have the best career, but I am not sure (we'll find out in a few years) if prime Simmons was as good as prime Everett.

Simmons is the best defensive SS in the game. I agree that if he doesnt get a GG, the award is a joke. Who cares of Tulo is the better hitter. GG is about defense and Simmons should win it.

I was surprised Tulo didn't get Gattis's RBI hit.

Also, good job by Justin to score on a shallow ball hit hard to a guy with a strong arm.

Justin runs well on the bases for a chubby guy. The outfield is a different story.

But you know, those people like to be flashy and score runs.

Tell you what....it feels good to look at the standings and see a 10 game lead. When was the last time the Braves had a 10 game lead in the division this late in the year?

It does feel good to know that the playoffs are ahead and it wont be a one game deal this year. We will get a chance to see what our guys will do in a 5-game series.
