Braves sign RHP Todd Coffey to Minor League Deal

Given the latest signings (namely the Veras signing) was a reaction to losing Simmons, it really isn't surprising that such moves "feel desperate." These type of reactionary signings after a key loss usually do.

Note: I am not disagreeing with you. I am just saying it seems some are overreacting to your "starting to feel desperate" comment.

Yes, they are. And, for the record, I said it BEFORE the news about Simmons broke. It's clear now that the reason this felt desperate is because it was. They've known about Simmons and have grabbed any potential option in an attempt to build depth for the bullpen. Doesn't make it good or bad. Just desperate.

Fine.

How is signing Veras, desperate when we needed a RP. Most teams in all sports do that after injuries, it's common sense.

Markakis was desperate after trading Heyward.

Signing Aoki to a 1-2 year deal and flipping him at the deadline would have been better but thats another story.

No one is talking about Markakis. And common sense can still feel desperate. Good decisions can be desperate ones. You guys need to take a breath, read the thread, and think for a second about what it means to feel desperate.

Right. It seems to me the Simmons news pretty much confirmed your point.

I know what it means, signing Veras to a non-guaranteed deal isnt desperate at all.

Who's saying they should? You guys are trying to stretch my comment to mean all kinds of things I didn't say.

I just feel like you are trying to construct an argument whereby the FO is exhibiting poor judgement (as is the common theme in many posters at this time). Any team in their current position knowing one of the targetted key members just was lost for the year would do something similar. I'm just not sure its desperation as much as it is ensuring there are options to fill that void. Desperation IMO would be to trade off a big time prospect to get an arm or signing a marginal player to a lucrative deal. Minor league deals are not desperate IMO.

And please show me where I've tried to construct this argument? I even said that it didn't mean it was a bad thing. Seems to me you guys are the ones doing all my constructing for me.

Desperate implies a negative reaction does it not? Decisions made not based on sound logic but in response to situations which cause an unorthodox response.

Not necessarily. Some of the best decisions are desperate ones. Sometimes the ONLY decisions available are desperate ones. I picked up a feeling of desperation from the combination of moves and the players involved. Then they announced Simmons going down. The feeling of desperation came from them losing a major piece of the bullpen. It's there. It happened. It's real. Doesn't mean the moves they made were bad or good.

A number of us considered the Harang signing last year a desperate move, but it also didn't cost us a lot of money unlike the Santana signing. There are different degrees of desperation IMO. Further, I wouldn't expect a rebuilding team like us to make a big desperation move a la the Santana signing last year. That is what teams that expect to win and challenge for a division do.

I just still don't see how the signing of guys to minor league deals can be considered desperate moves. I think at this point its just throwing as much **** against a wall and hoping it sticks. I would say a move was desperate if they overpaid for a scrub or traded some prospects.

It's not so much just the act of signing said guys, but the variety in particular that we've chosen ... given the team's supposed 'rebuilding' status.

I wish the team would fully embrace the youth component of a traditional rebuild and toss aside this obsession with veteran character.

Yea, it annoys me that we're likely to see EY Jr and Gomes types instead of giving a real shot to more Perez, Hunter and younger players. I understand not going with Peraza and those types, due to not wanting to start their clock. But it's a total joke calling this a "Youth Movement" and not giving the younger players much of a shot.

This organization went through an unprecedented run at winning while still continually churning out incredible farm systems. They just overhauled the orgnaization with talent from recent trades as well as international signings. They hvae two top 30 picks in the next draft.

Maybe its a bit of arrogance but they don't feel the need to 100% throw away this season in order to ensure the future is bright after all the moves that have been made. Maybe they are crazy.

I understand I'm a bit of an optimist (understatement of the century there) but I think the team can be competitive all year long and baseball is a funny game. Sometimes crazy things happen. If the Braves are in a the wild card hunt until early to mid September then thats a wildly successful year and really can energize the fanbase moving forward assuming growth in the farm.

When the term youth movement is used I think thats more with an eye at future years. I think the Braves want Clark and his staff to get one full year look at the guys in the system and then evaulate for 2016.

I agree sorta, but is it a bad thing not starting the clocks of some young guys while maybe getting a prospect or so for some of the veterans they signed.

Btw, i dont think the youth movement will be started until 2016.

Next year is a throwaway year unfortunately unless a LOT broke right (not impossible in this game)
