GDT: 4/8/'15 - Atlanta Braves (Shelby) @ Miami Marlins (Koehler), Fredi showing off.

Eventually EYJ/CJ/whoever is in LF is going to be replaced by more talented players. Nobody expects the offense to be good this year. But, their pitching is going to carry the team to more wins than most predicted this year.

I predict Tulo is manning 3B by 2017.

Being around .500 would be a Mukaki Rebuild failure, in my opinion. Either we are good enough for the playoffs somehow, or we lose 90 games to get a good draft pick.

I don't get that. My understanding is that there isn't a Strausberg type guy in the draft. Not to mention 4 or 5 of them. So does it really matter if we pick 7 vs 29? If we are picking high upside HS kids, like most expect, then you can get them up and down the draft. You just have to have the money to pay them. That is the point of having all the picks, we can pony up big bucks for hard to sign guys and then grab a college arm or something elsewhere and pay less.

If you're going to rebuild and focus on the draft (look what we've done to get draft picks this year) and 2017, then if by signing a few guys like Markakis, Grilli, Gomes, and Johnson you add enough wins to not get a protected pick, you failed. Period. Those extra wins do absolutely nothing but hurt the 2017 team.

I tend to agree.

Protected pick only matters if you sign a big FA. Who do you want to sign? I think the bridge is burned with Heyward and he's too expensive. I don't think JUp comes back to the site of his brother's failure b/c someone else will offer more or comparable money. Cespedes......not sold.

I'd rather see if we can pry a good outfield prospect like Bell or Meadows from the Pirates for some our pitching (ideally a healthy Minor).

Maybe it's the Wren years but I'm totally off on FA. I don't think you ever get value. Always paying way more and for longer than you should. I'd rather trade players and prospects. Extend guys we like and know for multiple years.

Reviews of this draft is that its weak at the top 15 picks but afterwards pretty much the same as every other draft.

Yeah, signing extenstions like the one Freeman got is the best way to go. You get all their prime years.

this ain't the NBA. You don't tank for high draft picks (unless you're the nats and strasburg/harper are there). that guy isn't there in this draft. i'd rather not see them lose 90+ games. you either draft well or don't.

I tend to agree.

And I think playing in games that matter helps with our young guys. If guys like Folty, Peraza, etc are up late experience is great. Experience with at least some pressure is better, IMO.

I don't see how it hurts 2017. We aren't picking anyone in the draft who will play in 2017. Only way it hurts is if we lose a pick b/c we sign a top FA. Just don't sign a top FA. I don't want to give 5+ years to 30+ y/o pitchers. It might work out, but I think we can develop a good rotation.

If there was a Strasburg or Harper or no doubt consensus guy maybe....but I agree, there is no reason to tank unless you want to go a FA shopping spree.

When has a big FA signing worked out for someone? I know Maddux for us a long time ago. I know it happens. But it has to be less than 25% of the time it works out that you sign a guy for more than 2 years as a FA and it works out well.

I'm not going to argue about whether 81 wins is a fail. I think it's obvious that it is as far as the farm system goes. And we're going to need a few MAJOR pieces for 2017, which might mean having to target the free agent market after this season, depending what is available. In that case, you want to grab the player you need for 2017 with a protected pick and trade off the players like Markakis, Grilli, etc to get another good draft pick before loading up for the magical 2017.

It doesn't matter. We have this year and next to build for 2017. We have to do the best we can with what we have to work with.
