GDT: 4/8/'15 - Atlanta Braves (Shelby) @ Miami Marlins (Koehler), Fredi showing off.

Winning in the minor leagues is different than winning in the major leagues. If that wasn't the case every minor leaguer would transition to the major leagues with no problem. As we've see though it's not that easy.

Having issues transitioning to the major leagues from the minors is not about winning. It's about the insane increase in talent level.

The transition isn't about winning, though. Players aren't failing at the big league level because they don't know how to win, with a few rare exceptions.

Except the players largely responsible will not be part of the 2017 team (promised land) with the possible exception of Markakis and Freeman.

The promised land is the playoffs. Who are these players who will largely be responsible for our success that will be so hard to replace. Callaspo? Pierzynski? Stults? If Peraza takes a starting spot this year we will have long term players at 5 of 8 positions. With Minor we have 4 good young starters through 2017 and a **** load of depth in the minors. The biggest contributes will be JJ and Grilli but the pen should be the easiest for them to replace.

I think you are making a bigger deal out of this than need be. What young players are Gomes, Markakis, KJ, and Peirzynski blocking? Is picking a few spots lower going to really hurt us that much? We still are going to get a really good prospect if we do our homework. We don't have to have the 1st pick in the draft. It's more important about how we develop our draft picks than it is to have a really high pick. I'd rather this team win as much as they can than I would our organization worrying about where we pick.

I'm not making a big deal out of it. I specifically said to what degree it is going to hurt is the question.

People can be critical or point out flaws without it being them "making a big deal" out of anything. It's kind of silly that some decided to jump on the very simple fact that a better draft pick is BETTER.

Not at the expense of losing.

Winning is never a bad thing in my opinion. I can see your argument more in other sports like the NFL or NBA, I don't see it as an issue in baseball.

80 wins is as much a loser as 70. The only significant difference is the draft slot.

We won 79 games last year. Who here doesn't wish we would've lost a few more to get a better pick?

That's what the coaches are paid to do

I think the manager in baseball is simply paid to talk to the media. I'm still not sure why they get so much credit/blame. GM or bench coach can make the line up. Bench coach could call the steal, double switch etc. Hitting coach does hitting. pitching coach does pitching, don't see why they can't take em out and pick bull pen guys.

Players are needed to impart the best habits.

So a veteran player stops being able to teach winning habits when he becomes a coach?

Maybe I'm just dense, but why?

No way of knowing if 70 wins is in that top 10 protected pick range or not. And again, if you don't sign one of the top 25 FA, it doesn't matter AT ALL. Maybe you'd get slightly higher pool money, but with the glut of picks the braves have, that doesn't matter.

I wish we would have won more.

I like to see my team do well, not do worse.

Winning more isn't part of this discussion. This is about 80 vs 70. If we can make the playoffs (which I specifically mentioned earlier), OF COURSE that's better. But that's not what we are talking about.

Me. What good would it have done? Outside of the top 5, who is better?

We drafted a high ceiling hitter. He may suck. But the first round of MLB is littered with that. If we could have had Rodon, a guy who is pushing for the league from day 1, ok....but you aren't getting a guy like that outside top 5.

It's not like we can't give up on the season at some point in the future and still have time to tank our way to a better pick.

Might as well play to win as much as possible until you're 100% certain the team isn't going to catch lightning in a bottle. If the Braves are realistically eliminated at the All-Star break, or August 1st, or whenever, there's no reason why they couldn't bring up the Gwinnett roster and start "playing for the future"/ tanking games/ trying to win without the talent to do so. I agree that it's better to win 65 than 75 for the sake of the draft, but it's way too early to assume the worst.
