GDT: 4/10/'15 - Atlanta Braves (Stults) vs. New York Mets, Fredi showing off again.

The pundits said the same thing in 1991 too...

No, not really. The team had high end young talent on the brink of success and added a handful of vets. That team wasn't in full rebuild mode.

That team added Bream, Pendleton, Belliard. This team added Markakis, Peterson, Gomes.

the answer to this is you trade him because that what if scenario isn't going to happen. This team still isn't very good.

I've spent a lot of years calculating who's going to win how many before the season. Sometimes I'm right, other times- like last year- I'm horribly wrong. I'm willing to let them play the games and show us what their ceiling is.

Frankly, I'm not sure I thought they had a four game winning streak in them, so they've already exceeded my expectations.

Bull**** they weren't. They hadn't seen the upper division in eight years. And those adds weren't the cream of the crop. A first baseman with little power, an overweight third baseman with a very erratic hitting past, and a 5'5" glove-only shortstop. A bunch of young pitching they hoped was ready. Shazam.

This season is going to be an interesting experiment in platooning. I've always been a fan of using platoons at one or two positions to cover weaknesses inexpensively. But it looks like we're going to have position sharing of one sort or another at 5 positions.

Everybody should stay sharp. Contrast last year, when Doumit would get ten ABs a month and we wondered why he sucked.

Sid Bream had come off an age 29 season off a 124 OPS+ season; with 113 and 114 the previous 2 years. Pendleton was highly thought of but, was coming off a rough year (though he was a two time gold glover). Belliard was obviously acquired for his defense.

How much do you remember 91? These were vet signings bc the Braves believed they were ready to contend.

Since every team in the majors has a four game win streak in any given year, you must have had lower expectations for this team than I did.

The team is fun to watch. But so is any team in the middle of a winning streak. Let's give the team one trip through the whole rotation before we reconfigure our expectations.

Just looking at stats. Didn't realize how badly Freeman has hit this year. 6 ks in 17 PAs.

I remember it very well. They hoped they were ready to contend, but there was no established road map, certainly not for this franchise.

Bream, by the way, had fifty at bats in 1989, so we'll throw out that 114. The three seasons he played before Atlanta, he had 13, 10 and 15 HRs, and in magical '91 he played 90 games, 11 HRs, 45 RBI, hit .253/.313/.423. So I'll stand by my characterization as a first baseman with little power.

The intent for the signings was to upgrade the team and try to contend. Bream was considered a good defender and he hit ok for a 1B in that time. What his homerun numbers at the time don't prove anything.

So you have a team in 91 acquiring vets to contend. You have a team this year acquiring vets just bc they need to fill out the roster.

He's distracted. Starting to irritate me, actually. It's fine, understandable even, to be upset about the team unloading after selling you on a perennial playoff core, but leave it in the clubhouse. Don't bring that **** on the field with you.
