Around Baseball 2015 Edition

Maybe there should be, sure. I don't have it. I'm stating my opinion on what an ace is, and it's more than just rate stats and FIP and xFIP. I believe true aces go deep into games consistently. Stras does not do that as well as the guys who I personally consider truly elite. He bests them in some rate stats. But the elite guys goes deep into games consistently, IMO.

Well maybe Chop Country should take it upon ourselves to quantify what a true ace is.

We should look at the last 10 years to determine what drove the top 10 pitchers int he league. Then make a simple checklist.

only if you were on the whistlers bandwagon when he was a brave. if you like him just because he is on the nationals then I think that would violate some type of fan- law somewhere.

Isn't GF the expert on fan law though? If he isn't aware of it I'm just not sure if anyone else would.

750 in May....840 last 2 weeks

Is anyone really surprised by this? That's kind of Jason's MO - hit like Melvin Upton for the first month or two, then hit like Justin Upton (minus most of the HRs) for a month, then level out to a .730 - .800 OPS player for the remainder of the year. Not a star offensive player by any stretch, but not a guy that will hurt your lineup either. I've been trying to talk my Cardinal fan friends off the ledge for a couple of weeks by reminding them of Jason's history.

What's the quantifiable number that makes someone an "ace"

Sadly I dont' think there's a quantifiable number that makes someone an ace. I think being an ace has a mental side of things. I think aces thrive under pressure and can be the stopper. 3 guys that come to mind as clear aces even if they weren't always in that top of the top group are Hudson, Smoltz, and Schilling. Those 3 guys when they took the mound you knew other teams were scared. They knew a war was coming. As a fan of those guys you knew you were gonna win that game. That to me is what an ace is, someone who you know will win you the game. The title has been bestowed upon many pitchers, but in reality it's one you can't quantify. I hate it for that reason.

And no Shelby Miller is not an ace. At least not yet. I still feel more confident even with his struggles in Julio being the stopper.

Meanwhile, Nick the Stick is still schooling him. .771 OPS on the year. .827 OPS since May 4.

But it's not sustainable doe... The only thing sustainable is his uncharacteristic low power output not his somewhat high BABIP based off a 30% line drive rate.

Only negative statistics with this years Brave team are sustainable.

I love the optimism, but the outright refusal of some to accept that we've performed over our actual ability is a little shocking to me

Probably not, at least long term. But he's sustained it through the 1st two months of the season. Aberrations sometimes last an entire season (Sosa, Infante, etc.).
