June Rule IV pre-draft Thread

So, here is my best guess at who the Braves may draft:

14 -- Tyler Stephenson, C, Kennesaw Mountain HS, Kennesaw, GA
28 -- Dakota Chalmers, RHP, North Forsyth HS, Cumming, GA
41 -- Austin Smith, RHP, Park Vista HS, Boynton Beach, FL
54 -- Nick Neidert, RHP, Peachtree Ridge HS, Suwanee, GA
75 -- Chandler Day, RHP, Watkins Memorial HS, Pataskala, OH
89 -- Kep Brown, OF, Wando HS, Mount Pleasant, SC

I'll play.

14. Mike Nikorak, RHP, Stroudsburg HS, PA
28. Chris Betts, C, Wilson HS, Long Beach, CA
41. Donnie Dewees, OF, North Florida
54. Brady Singer, RHP, Eustis HS, FL
75. Jeff Degano, LHP, Indiana State
89. Garrett Zech, OF, Naples HS, FL

I don't follow the draft like I used to, so thanks for everyone throwing out some possible names. I read the various prospect rankings, but I don't dig as deeply into the information as I used to.

I still think Mac Marshall will be a Braves' draft pick provided he's healthy.

Me too. I just couldn't work him in when I listed those players. If available, they might just take him at 75.

14. Braves

Atlanta would absolutely love for Stephenson to fall this far. He’s another volatile stock, likely in consideration for many teams earlier than this for the right price. He shall not pass this spot.

Selection: Tyler Stephenson, c, Kennesaw (Ga.) Mountain High

And:

28. Braves: It’s time for Atlanta to build a wall around Georgia again. Selection: Dakota Chalmers, rhp, North Forsyth HS, Cumming, Ga.

I would love Stephenson, and I want a high-upside bat and arm with the first two if we can get it, but I would not be in favor of 4 of our first 5 picks being used on pitching.

14. Braves – Cornelius Randolph, 3B, Griffin HS (GA), Clemson commit

The Braves are tied to Georgia prep talent as usual and it’s an especially good year to be doing that. Stephenson and Cameron would both stop here if they slid down the board due to bonus demands. It sounds like Randolph is third in line for the Braves among that group, but there’s some buzz that a college pitcher could be ahead of Randolph on the board, with Vanderbilt righty Walker Buehler the most common name being brought up.

Fangraphs has Daz at 9. SI had him at 5. Keith Law puts him at 19 to Pittsburgh. Seems to think he's going to be expensive and cites Pirates' willingness to go above slot.

He still thinks we take Stephenson (also looking at Tucker/Clark/Kaprielian).

I'd take Cameron if he were still available.

Also still think the Braves may shoot for one of Aiken/Matuella/Allard/Kirby (the injured) with that 28 pick if they drop.

I would hope we would take Cameron on the off chance he falls to us. I seriously doubt either he or Tucker are there when we pick, but we better pull the trigger if they are.

Of the more reasonable names, Stephenson is the one I want, followed by Whitley. I'd be ok with Randolph, but I don't think he has a ton of power.

My guess is that the 'buzz' around a college arm is us trying to throw some people off.

Can't fathom that we'd take anyone other than Stephenson if he's still there at #14 - in a draft short on Catchers with serious upside, it's tough to believe we'd pass on the one who appears to be one who looks like he could eventually become a franchise Catcher, especially when he's a local kid.

I love Daz' profile, but I still think you have to take Stephenson over him even if Daz somehow slides. The Braves are suddenly an organization flush with potential long-term "answers" at every up-the-middle position other than the most important one. Simmons, Maybin, Peterson, Perez, Peraza, Smith, Albies, and a couple others represent pretty good options - when you consider that it doesn't appear that the organization is sold on Bethancourt, it's awfully tough to pass on a kid who would likely represent the next best option as a solution the second the ink dries on his contract.

I'd be disappointed with taking a college pitcher when the strength of this draft is high school pitching.

Beuhler would be a great pick I just dont think we will get the chance to pick him. I think he could jump right to AA and add our glut of SP prospects in the high minors. Also like Thomas Eshelman if we could get him around pick #75 or so. Both could help the Braves by 2017 if not sooner.

Interesting to see a lot of Braves' late draft picks from 2012 featured in some of the draft previews. Braves drafted OFs Gio Brusa (Pacific), Braden Bishop (Washington), and Ben Johnson (Texas) as flyers they hoped to sign with leftover dollars, but they all opted for college and all look to be drafted in the first 5 rounds or so next month. RHP Jimmy Herget (South Florida) was the Braves' 40th round pick in 2012 as well and he will be drafted in the same strata as the OFs I've mentioned.

Jonathan Mayo's latest mock has Atlanta taking Kolby Allard, LHP from a HS in CA at 14 and Ashe Russell, RHP from a HS in IN at 28.

I've read some things about Russell that makes me think the Braves will not take him, but I do like the emphasis on pitching. In his scenario, Stephenson goes 11 to Cincinnati and the Braves pass on Randolph for Allard.

I worry a little bit about Allard's health, especially given his build. That said, I don't think he drops out if the top 10 without the injury.
