Around Baseball 2015 Edition

That's the final word, as far as I'm concerned. Pro sports has a pretty ****ty track record for dealing with challenges other than physical injury.

The Royals handled Zach Greinke's depression and anxiety issues with some sensitivity, and were rewarded for it. The Angels made a ****ty mercenary call here, and I hope it rebounds on them in spades.

And categorically false as well. There is nothing "adult" about bashing the guy's addiction publicly and issuing a public statement criticizing the league for not suspending your own player.

I had no issue with them moving on from Hamilton, but giving him the Bulls/Thibs treatment was ethically wrong.

You wound me, sir, with your topicality.

I'm sorry but I think addiction ultimately begins with a choice. At some point down the road I suppose there are tremendous hurdles to overcome in order to clean yourself up but at some point someone has to take accountability of their lives. We do not know what Hamilton and Moreno discussed at the onset of that contract. I'm not saying Moreno comes out of this looking like anything but an insensitive prick but I think he has every right to be enraged with Hamilton.

I like you as a poster, and likewise you've always been fair to me on these shared internets; however I have to say—as much as it pains me—that the bolded words describe how your posts are making you sound at the moment.

I do not expect you think of me in this situation in any other light. While I also share the same affinity towards you, and many on this board, I can't pander to my audience. If I am not true to my beliefs then I am nothing.

Addiction is hardly a choice.

I could see the Braves offense performing like they have the past 10 games, but it is readily apparent that the Braves pitching is starting to perform to expectations. The pitching upgrades will more than account for the offensive regression, IMO.

I still think we are a 70ish win team, but I wouldn't be shocked to see them flirt with .500 the rest of the season and/or up until the trade deadline.

I don't think we're going to hit 1 HR every 10 games.

No, but we don't have a lot of good hitters hence the general regression. The offense has been very mediocre in May.

And geez, I'm on your side here. Throw me a bone.

I know what you meant, I was just saying I think simply hitting 2-3 more homers will make our offense not nearly as bad as it's been. We're in a lull right now. A couple good games, which is possible, we're out of it.

I agree. If we hit like we did the past ten games then we are the worst offense in the history of baseball.

The offense will do better soon. The issue is that we won't have many series where we score 20 runs to balance out the slow spells.

Yeah. I don't expect us to be anything more than average at best.

Once we succumb to the notion that it is not a choice then the way out is much harder for those who are addicted. Hope has to still exist.

This actually isn't accurate. The initial use is a choice, and there are measures to be taken and healthy life choices to be made to continue to safe guard from initial use for an addict.

After an addict is in full "relapse mode" there is very little to chose until some brief moment of clarity can be latched on to, usually by loved ones around the addict, and he can be separated from the drugs and unhealthy lifestyle long enough to resume making healthy decisions.

An addicts brain while in active addiction generally lacks the cognitive functioning required to separate from himself/herself from these unhealthy endeavors. Mix these struggles with insight with the powerful physical component associated with drugs, and difficulties with guilt and shame, you could understand why sobering up is particularly hard. Especially considering how long it takes brain functions to regain a state of normalcy.

So I agree accountability for his actions are required, but so is an understanding of how will power is not a sufficient means to stop once addiction has resumed.

Phillies DFA Grady Sizemore. He looks about done, but was decent enough the second half of last season to get a $2MM commitment for this year.

Can play all three OF positions still. Just saying. I'd rather see him out there than Gomes.
