Heyward's OBP is .315, so i guess he sucks?

That OBP is pedestrian, but he's hit with enough power to make him a slightly above average hitter this year.

No one is saying Heyward has been great this year. His wRC is 107 which suggests he's been 7% better than an average hitter.

But it shouldn't be too hard to understand that OPS is flawed as stat since it doesn't value the ability to get on base. First they are not even on the same point scale. OBP caps out at 1000 and SLG at 4000. Just adding the two doesn't work if you want to be exact. It's a good rough guide but some people want more then that.

The purpose of stats isn't to measure dicks. It's to tell truth about value. The statistics community moved on from OPS long ago because the acknowledgment that OBP should be weighted more so than slugging.

Not just that, but that a hit should be worth more than a walk. And that hits have different values. OPS has a few flaws, including baked in advantages for certain types of players. Generally there's a moderate correlation, but wRC+ does favor the OBP guys more, and the high average guys more as well.
