2015 DRAFT SIGNING THREAD

Maybe not an idiot... But you did go out of your way to croon sarcastically post after post that my concern was obviously silly. I'm glad you could care less about the rumors... Good for you and a huge pat on the back?

Dude get a life! All I said was not to worry you took it there!

Unsigned 1st rounders as of 7/6:

1. Dansby Swanson (Vandy) ARIZ
14. Kolby Allard (SCHS) ATL UCLA commit
16. James Kaprelian (UCLA) NYY
24. Walker Buehler (Vandy) LAD
35l Kyle Funkhauser (Louisville) LAD

Bill has his sources back now.

The same ones that handed him Greinke as the MP and guaranteed that he'd sign a below-market extension because he hated the spotlight of the big markets?

Just poking (to an extent), but Bill was another one who spoke in absolutes even when he knew the information he was getting was far from that.

The only ones I personally find surprising from that group are Swanson and Allard. Swanson's not going to come close to improving his leverage by going back to Vandy and playing out his Senior season, and Allard's not likely to improve his much even if he goes to a Junior College to re-enter the 2016 Draft because questions will then surface about the level of competition he faced (assuming he could get #8 slot money from the Braves right now). The other three could conceivably turn themselves into Top 10 picks next year (although they'd also lose leverage as Senior signs like Swanson) IF they have great seasons against top-flight competition, so you can at least see that angle IMO.

Today's latest...

"The Braves continue to work toward a deal with No. 14 overall pick Kolby Allard, assistant GM John Coppolella tells David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We’re still going through the process, and we’re very hopeful that we can sign Kolby,” said Coppolella. “You would’ve like to have had him signed earlier, but you understand that it’s a process. I wouldn’t say there’s a holdup on his end or our end, we just haven’t reached the finish line yet.” O’Brien recently reported that there’s a “legit chance” that the Braves won’t ink Allard. He notes that there’s been some speculation that adviser Casey Close of Excel Sports has been seeking a bonus more in line with where Allard would’ve been drafted had a back injury not dropped his stock a bit. As I noted at the time of O’Brien’s initial report, the Braves can offer Allard about $3.462MM (which is $626K over slot) without incurring the loss of a pick."

I'm happy to see the Braves draw a line in this sand on this. Casey Close is fooling himself if he thinks he has the leverage here. Way more downside than upside for Allard to pass up 14th pick money in 2015 dollars for a chance at a higher slot value in 2018 dollars. Not only would he be betting on continued health and performance, but the draft in 2018 may look a lot different w/ the new CBA. There's a chance that international players will be included, which could dilute the bonus pool from the perspective of a domestic player.

didn't this agent do this last year and his guy ended up getting less money?

I'm fine with drawing a line in the sand so long as it works. But if we're offering less than we can, I would hope we're prepared to just give him what he wants before letting him go. If we have the room in slot money to pay more, it wouldn't make sense for us not to pay it.

If Close is asking for more than we can offer, then he's dumb.

The Braves can pay Allard $3.462M without losing a pick next year, but they will also pay a penalty of ~$450k (75% of the amount they exceeded their bonus pool). So now that makes Allard's real cost closer to $4M.

Close is probably asking for ~$3.4M (max without losing a pick), and the Braves are probably offering ~$2.8M (all the remaining bonus pool money). It would be VERY foolish for Allard to risk that kind of cash in hopes of improving his draft stock (see Aiken just last year for an example), so I would bet they meet in the middle somewhere around $3M.

Allard just tweeted this.

@KolbyAllard: Headin' out to #BravesCountry in a couple days, let the journey begin!!! 🇺🇸⚾️ #CHOPNation
