Farewell to Wood, Peraza, Jimmy Johns, and Avilans.

I'm not crazy about this trade, but I think a lot of people who are upset about it will be pleasantly surprised by Olivera. I'm assuming the Dodgers are paying all of the bonus, which makes his contract very attractive. There are health issues and of course questions about how he will age. But whatever the age, we do have him at potentially very attractive salaries for the next five or six years.

My main issue with the trade is giving up Peraza. Given he is 21, I think his upside is a bit higher than most people seem to think, including apparently the front office.

Why do people keep saying that? He's playrd in 19 minor league games and he's never faced MLB pitching, which happens to be the best pitching in the world....and one major factor... HES 30!!!

I'll put it this way. Alex Wood is a young, already high level starter in MLB. They should have gotten no less than Cory Seager in this deal.

They should have gotten arguably the best prospect in baseball for Wood?

Are you high on wood?

Hamels didnt even get a prospect as good as Seager.

I think this trade illustrates the strategic challenges involved in trying to convert a stockpile of pitching into hitters. Acquiring proven low risk hitting talent is going to be prohibitively costly in the current era. So you will have to take risks on guys like Olivera. There are certain things to like about Olivera. The scouting reports indicate he is a polished complete hitter. Certainly not a hacker.

But what we are seeing is that the approach the Cubs have taken to rebuilding (stockpiling young hitting talent) is much better strategically in the current era than the one we have been taking.

Exactly how are we seeing that?

THis is an amazing deal for them. THey get a set up guy, a lefty reliever, a potential long term starting SS, and a legit starter to plug in behind Kershaw/Greinke. THey essentially just bought those guys for cash.

Yep. The biggest piece they gave up was a guy who wasn't ever going to play a role for them. He's totally blocked.

Why not at least insist on Turner? Seager is ready for the majors right now.

I see them flipping Wood and others for Price.

Hopefully the medicals kill this, or it's not what has been reported. I know Wood isn't Hamels, but he's also $50 million cheaper and only 24. Based on what the Phils are getting for Hamels and comparing that to our deal, we are completely getting shafted here. Hamels brought back a top C prospect, good OF prospect, top SP prospect and another 2 decent SP prospects. I know we can't get that return for Wood alone. But when you add Johnson and a top tier prospect in Peraza, you expect more than a reliever, middling prospect and 30 year old, unproven Olivera.

Given everything Hart has masterminded, I can't fathom he would go for this. At the very least, De Leon and Barnes should be added to the deal, or Puig.

A 2016 lineup of:

Peterson

Markakis

Freeman

Olivera

Maybin

LF/Puig?

Barnes or C

Simmons

That's not terrible.

If Olivera is such an impact bat, I don't understand why he wasn't starting for Los Angeles.

I disagree with that. Most folks who are grumping about this trade are grumping specifically about his age and not his ability. You can't just write off the health isssues and the age. We're giving up some very solid assets for this guy.

For me, I am bullish on Olivera being able to hit. Real bullish. My concerns are defense and durability / health. The guy is a legit offensive talent.

Justin Turner and Howie Kendrick.

The Dodgers have rigged the system. They can afford to sign the best of the best to trade for even better.

Well, if this "trade" goes through when do we see Hector in Atlanta...where does this put Jace and we still have CJ...

I guess you could speculate who the starting 5 going forward are as well...
