Braves to sign Flowers

I wonder if a Miller trade was waiting on this Flowers signing so the Braves could include CB as part of the package.

Per a source, the #Braves have agreed with Tyler Flowers. He'll get $2M in 2016, $3M in 2017 and he has a $4M ($300K buyout) option for 2018

Not sure CB is gone yet. Place him in AAA. Have him continue to work and get stronger. I don't want to just get rid of him but if he can be included in a deal to bring us back talent, I'm down.

Good stuff here. A little surprised by 2 years and an option, but we're getting an underrated defensive catcher to replace our overrated one . . . and only paying backup money.

He is out of options and must pass through waivers first. I think it's very unlikely nobody would claim him, and I think it's equally unlikely the Braves would give up all leverage in a CB trade by signing AJP and Flowers before a deal for CB was in place.

I'm guessing he will be packaged with Miller, and that deal is already in place.

If Flowers was signed before a CB deal was lined up, it was a bonehead move by Coppy.

I think best case now is we can trade Betty for a RHH CF (platoon type) or a LHRP. Everyone in the free world knows we want to trade him, but that's been more or less the case for weeks.

From your lips to God's ears.

We don't necessarily lose leverage. It would be clear we need to move him, but you can still trade him to other teams, too. We can offer Bethancourt for a bigger return in a deal, and if the other team doesn't agree, we tell him we'll pull Bethancourt out and trade him to someone else. So if that team wants him, they'll still have to include something else in a deal.

An interesting note according to a fangraphs article about Miller: Folty, Wisler and Miller were among the top 10-15 pitchers in baseball last year in being cheated out of strikes. Something like 59 extra strikes for Miller and in the 30s for Folty and Wisler.

Having an excellent framer like Flowers might go a long way towards getting better performance out of these young starters.

Yeah, it also means there's actually a decent chance Miller pitches better in 2016 than he did in 2015, or at least that there was more there last year. Still, I'm not sure if reducing the 3 years he has left is worth the chance he pitches even better. His value is not likely to go much higher than it is now no matter what.

Tyler Flowers was 6th in Baseball Prospectus' framing runs metric for catchers last year. CB was 85th and AJP was 101st out of 105.
