With the Cowboys season essentially over, here are some thoughts on where I think the team should be doing this offseason:
Quarterback: Tony Romo is still a good quarterback, but he's getting older and the injuries are piling up. It's time to think about the future and also about having a better backup situation. Matt Cassel should not be in any consideration. Kellen Moore will start the last two games. This will be an audition for him. A chance to show whether or not the Cowboys should keep him around, or bring in a veteran like Robert Griffin III or Colin Kaepernick as a backup for Romo. The Cowboys need to draft anyway. The QB class is not going to be real strong this year, but I am interested in Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State. I'll hear a lot about him next month as he will be down here for the Senior Bowl. In any case, the time to start thinking about life after Romo is now.
Offensive Line: The O-Line is great, which makes the fact the team struggled so badly on third and short even more irritating. May cost the line coach his job. Not looking for a lot of changes here, if any. The group of Smith, Collins, Frederick, Martin, and Free should be the starting five again next year.
Running Back: I wish the Cowboys spent a draft pick this year on a back, but they didn't and I think it hurt them. McFadden is OK, but he's not a feature back at this stage of his career. The team was hurt by the injury early in the year to Lance Dunbar and the antics of Joseph Randle. This position has to be a need filled in the draft. A couple early favorites for me are Derrick Henry and Alex Collins.
Wide Receiver/Tight End: I have said for a while now, as long as Dez Bryant is healthy and keeps his head on straight, he's an elite WR. I think some frustration got to him, but he is still a top notch player. Cole Beasley has stepped up. I've liked what he has done, aside from his Twitter stupidity. I have waited for Terrence Williams to become the #2 guy behind Bryant, but it hasn't happened. I look for him to return, but it's not certain. He needs to pick it up. Jason Witten continues to be great at TE, but his window is starting to close. I don't look for any significant move here.
Defensive Line: You all should know my feelings about Greg Hardy. He does not need to return. He is nothing but a distraction. Besides, I want to see what Randy Gregory can do as a starter. Real pleased with DeMarcus Lawrence. He is really emerging as a pass rusher. At the tackle spot, David Irving surprised me with some solid player. Wanting to see more out of Tyrone Crawford. I think the Cowboys will look at the DT spot for roster improvement.
Linebacker: This area needs a good look. Sean Lee on the field is a Pro Bowl linebacker. Problem is, the injuries. Happens too much. Anthony Hitchens got hit by the injury bug and I don't look for Rolando McClain to return. Linebacker should be an early round priority.
Defensive Backs: Barry Church is solid and J.J. Wilcox has gotten better. I like the potential of Byron Jones Other than that, I'm not real big on the defensive backfield. Problem hit in training camp when Orlando Scandrick injured his knee and missed the season. Brandon Carr has not lived up to his contract and Morris Claiborne has been a bust. One of those two are a good bet to go and looking at contracts, Claiborne could be the most likely one. Though Carr may be asked to take a pay cut.
Special Teams: No complains on kicking. Dan Bailey is as a good as it gets at PK and Chris Jones is a solid punter. Lucky Whitehead did a good job on returns, though he was good for a brain fart or two.
Coaching: With the injuries, the distractions from Hardy and Randle, and the constant meddling from Jerry Jones, Jason Garrett had a real tough job. With everything that happened, the team did not quit and did play hard. Just the results weren't there. Garrett should not take any blame and should return next year. If I'm the O-Line coach, I'd be a bit worried about my job security.
Draft: The Cowboys have five selections. No pick in the fifth or seventh round. Linebacker and quarterback have to be top priorities come draft time with RB also there, but after those first two needs. As it always seems to be, DB is also on the needs list.
