I say it every time, these opt outs are getting out of hand. My god, 6 years 130 million isnt enough for some people that they need an opt out in case they can get some more? ****. this. game.

Most of these opt outs are good for the team... The Braves are dumb for refusing to give them

they really are..
If the player stinks after 2 years and he doesn't have an opt out.. the team is stuck with that player for the remainder of the contract. But if he does have an opt out, then the team is still stuck with the player for the remainder. However, if the player is good enough to opt out then the team received max benefit from the contract while the player was there. Sure he opts out and you either loose his services or have to pay him more.. the only negative is that you don't get the draft pick if the player opts out.. I don't think anyway...

**I am wrong.. if a player opts out, the team can still offer a QO to him***

He did get $23m per (with a valuable opt out)... I wouldn't say his market tanked by any means.

Most of the hitters this offseason have taken considerably less in total value that they were projected for. J-Up accepted in the neighborhood of 15 million less than he was reportedly asking for at the start of the offseason. May be his market didn't "tank" but he certainly accepted less than he was looking for.

Opt outs can be very beneficial to the team. For one, it keeps the players from getting complacent. We all know players tend to perform better in contract years. If a guy is playing for another large payday, he's likely to not get complacentm.

Secondly, if the player plays well enough to warrant the opt out, then he has done what you signed him to do. And depending on the circumstances of your team and the players age/health you could simply let someone pay for his decline years.

Why? You are essentially eliminating any possibility of a player being locked into team friendly contracts which shifts the risk factors in the player's favor.

Rosenthal reported that we reached out to Upton before he signed with the Tigers.

Wow, did not see this coming. One thing we've definitely learned in the past couple weeks is that the Braves will consider adding more to the MLB team this year if it's the right fit. They don't seem committed to a plan of pooling all this money for July 2 signings.

It doesn't hurt to look. Throw out your offer and see what happens. If you can get a player below market value then you just gained equity.

If that person comes along super cheap. I am sure what the Braves offered was insulting enough that Upton's camp quickly scoffed at the offer. If there was an offer.

Well the Braves aren't in the market to add real major league players. Unless I missed something this off season that the Braves pursued any free agents. Besides I think more than just not offering an opt out clause held/holds this team back from free agent players.
