I think this is an important point to keep in mind. If a team like Tampa values what is going to happen in 2017 and 2018 they are not looking for a breakeven trade for important players like Archer and Longoria. And most indications are that they view 2017 as a chance to compete not a rebuilding year. Come mid-season that calculation might be a bit different on their part.

I don't think mallex and inciarte can play together in a lineup that also has albies.

Unless Mallex Does happen to be. Power hitter, which I don't think he is. I think sample size overestimated his power last year.
 
If our starting outfield is Ender, Kemp, and Markakis what percent of the season do you think all 3 will be healthy? Mallex is a lot better than staring someone like Francoeur. I don't think our offense is good enough to get by without having strong bench players. We have to make up for quality with depth.

Quite possible. But I wouldn't call that a 'power hitter,' I'd call it 'some power.' I don't think he's the first, but he might be the second.

You'd need to turn 3B into a full-bore power position (which you could accomplish with Todd Frazier) and it wouldn't hurt to get .450 SLG out of your catcher, either. All those folks suggesting Lucroy for '18, I'm down. Great player. Assuming we're still figuring it out for '17.

Well, I don't think I can get behind anything Bill Shanks says, but there is a je né sais quoi that isn't in the numbers. If Dansby Swanson had the same WARs as, I don't know, Milton Bradley, and he could, I'm sure we'd all agree that we'd prefer Dansby. Yes?

Second. Chicago has a ton of money, and owners willing to spend it. Rizzo's got team options for 2020 and 2021. By the time that the other 3 are approaching FA, chicago will have only Heyward still on contract. Lester will be gone, Zobrist will be gone, Rizzo will be gone. Cubs will probably have a small rebuild around 2019 or 2020 to restock some prospects if they need to by trading some of their less important arb eligible players, but Cubs are in a fine situation. Heyward's contract was structured in a way that when their young stars now are older, he'll be a non-factor

It shouldn't, I agree. The thing that's going to make things interesting is what they do with the Arrieta situation IMO. Do you pony up to keep him? If you don't, you're looking at an aging Lester as your #1 and Hendricks as your #2.

That's certainly not a bad start, but there's no help coming from within unless Dylan Cease can stay healthy and come in a hurry.
