Movie Thread

I'll watch this movie when it's out for download but it's getting poor reviews. Re: Pratt. I've liked him since Parks and Rec but really the type of character he plays best is that guy or his role in GOTG. He was meh in Jurassic World and Magnificent 7.

He was really good in the Magnificent 7, but he played a similar role as Star Lord to be blunt.

I didn't think he was anything special. But I guess that's more because the movie as a whole was meh. I know they tried to sell the movie with him and Denzel but I thought it was ok at best. I expect more out of Denzel movies to be honest.

Pratt is a star, but he is one dimensional. Not everyone has to be Christian Bale. Hell look at almost every single big star in the 80s, Arnold, Sly, Willis, etc. they're all extremely one dimensional.

Yes those were different times.

We already have guys who do what Pratt does and does it better (RDJ and Paul Rudd for one)

In all honesty Pratt is similar to Finn from TFA in that I find them to be over the top and try to force their humor.

Hes the default leader of GOTG but honestly Rocket Drax and even Groot were more interesting and entertaining.

Disagree on Willis. He has three dimensions: straight action; sci-fi action; buddy-comedy action. Range, my friend: range.

(Actually he was excellent, and showed good range, in Moonrise Kingdom, in a role at least somewhat removed from his usual milieu.)

Still dont understand how Rourke did not win an Oscar for The Wrestler. Was robbed big time.

I felt the same way about DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street—a performance that I think was a lot more nuanced than McConaughey's in Dallas Buyers Club. I still think McConaughey received a boost from the massive (and deserved) True Detective buzz hitting right during voting time.

Likewise, I thought DiCaprio's performance in The Revenant was both less superlative than his work in Wolf of Wall Street, and a lot less nuanced than Fassbinder's turn as Steve Jobs; but again I think elements outside the respective performances (in this case, all of DiCaprio's previous losses) tilted the scales.

I disagree. RDJ is totally different in style to Pratt. Pratt is a goof while RDJ is highly sarcastic and cutting. Paul Rudd is a maybe, but Rudd is usually the straight man to someone more absurd (Rogan, Carrell, etc.)

Saw Passengers a couple of nights ago. Vastly different from what was advertised. Not a Romcom in the least. Not really an action movie either. Hard to describe. It's getting crushed by the critics and I don't know how audiences are reacting. Pratt and Lawrence both do a good job, but it's a bit of a messy and uncomfortable movie that provides a high school level lesson in moral philosophy. Can't say much else other than that without revealing too much. I wouldn't go as far as to highly recommend it because I fully recognize it's going to be hit-or-miss for folks.

Leo wasn't even the best actor in The Revenant

i didn't really have a problem with McConaughey winning

Saw Fences the other night. I have seen it performed on stage and the movie loses nothing in the translation. Another movie that will net Oscar nominations in multiple categories. Washington and Davis are shoo-ins for nominations in their categories.

Is Denzels performance really that good?

Usually whatever movies I see it's Denzel playing someone not a character that's played by Denzel.

I get what you're saying and Denzel is overpowering in his portrayal of any character, but he does very well in this role.

Still think one of his absolute best performances is also one of his most quiet, nuanced, and restrained: Don Pedro in the 1993 adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing.
