Game on April 8

For the most part, yes. This team doesn't have a lot of talent on it.

MLB ranks...

Avg -- 18th

H -- 15th

2b -- 10th

3b -- 2nd

TB -- 18th

Obp -- 19th

Slugging -- 24th

OPS -- 23rd

So we're for the most part middle to lower 1/3rd of the pack in most offensive categories. Now look at these...

R --30th

RBIs -- 29th

Era -- 17th

BAA -- 14th

Seems we've had some bad luck

the front office has ordered Snit to save all the luck for home games this year...they also want to save some of it for the second half when they will be building momentum for 2018 when they plan to field a vibrant young team that is fun to dance with

I like that strategy... genius!

If we can somehow win today, we're right where we should be... get 1 of 3 on road and hopefully win 2 of 3 at home

Well just like last year....the team on the field now and the team on the field at the end of the year should be vastly different. Phillips is only here because of an injury to SRod. I'll still take watching Phillips over watching Aybar last year as a place holder. I still would like to know the three offers they had on Aybar right after the Simmons trade...wait....maybe I don't.

I very much hope we stink it up enough in the first half to the point that Coppy will trade the older assets at the deadline and let the young guys get experience for next year.

You might argue that we don't have many big chips to get anyone worth much, but Coppy for the most part has done his best work on those types of deals.

26th in WRC+, 24thin OPS+, 29th in runs. So yes you can say we've had some bad luck by a run or two. But that's hardly anything to be too concerned with. Offensively through 5 games the team has been among the bottom 5 imo. Pitching has been ok which is what I have expected. An above average rotation with a poor pen. A bottom 10 lineup. That's how I pegged this team going into the season. Seems pretty much on point so far. That sort of team will win you around 75 games or so on average.

I guess what we've learned is that hot hitting in the second half of one season doesn't necessarily carry over into the next season. I always appreciate a chance to learn something new.

On a slightly more serious note, I agree with your assessment that the pitching will be stronger than the offense this year.

Ok so how about Kemp/Chase/Jace? Through 5 games the Braves lead MLB in offensive production. I don't expect that to continue throughout the season.

May be as sustainable as us not scoring every time we get bases loaded, 2nd and 3rd with no outs, etc

I think we can rectify that by signing some veteran clutchness leadership. Someone with presence in the locker room.

We're 25th in MLB at leaving runners in scoring position at 4 per game. We're 28th at GIDP. We're getting runners on, so I'm not so sure I agree with you guys saying we aren't scoring bc of lack of talent.

Yes. It is a combination of a weak lineup (according to your numbers we rank 23rd in OPS) with some bad luck when hitting with RISP. Its a tough combination. But the second part is luck and that sorts itself out. The first part will have to be addressed at some point. The two possibilities for internal upgrades in AAA are Albies and Ruiz. No need to rush them. But I think they will help at some point.

Regardless, I think we can all agree that the hot finish mattered for 2017, and Swanson being up is helping the Pirates sell more tickets.

We've clearly seen a big enough sample to know how our offense will look all year. It really sucks FF is gonna turn in a .638 ops (.238/.304/.333) in '17

The thing that gives me hope is the hitting in the second half of last year. That has to mean something.
