Braves Call Up Max Fried, Board has Anuerysm

Another thing to consider here - given the salary dumps (Garcia and Rodriguez), they could be positioning themselves to jettison both Dickey and Johnson. Both have apparently cleared waivers by now, and there is the McCauley mention that they'd consider Fried for a spot start.

They obviously wouldn't get much in return for R. A. or Jim either, but they're obviously trying to unload money for some reason and now can trade either (or both) regardless of return.

*** Don't personally think that has anything to do with Verlander - will be interesting to eventually find out what's behind all the movement though.

I could get behind a rotation for the remainder of the year as Folty, Teheran, Newcomb, Sims, Fried

That is three rookies that are suppose to be part of the long term plan. If they show well, we have all kinds of options. If they implode, we can still send them down for more seasoning next year and at a minimum, they get a chance to shake off some nerves and find out what of thier stuff works at the best level.

BTW: the remaining schedule is not too hard either for their firsts

Well now, with its patronizing tone, the thread-title still reflects one point of view only—it's the other side of the coin, but it's still a singular editorial perspective. If you truly wanted a more objective title, you'd have just truncated things to Braves Call Up Max Fried, full-stop.

As for "taking it personally": for what it's worth, I have no problem with this particular call-up, and never said I did. As mentioned, Fried's on the older side as it is, so service-clock concerns are mitigated; moreover, given his injurious history, throwing him some limited major-league innings out of the bullpen, over the final month-plus of the season, is probably a good way to position the kid—whether it's for a rotational or relief role—to potentially make the 25-man out of the gate next spring. Personally, I was never banking much on Fried anyways, so that probably fuels my indifference to this specific instance—but I was totally on-board with bringing up Newcomb and Simms, to see what they've got, for much the same reasons as I'm ok with this.

However, in light of some of the much-less-justifiable promotions, I can totally understand and sympathize with some of the knee-jerk bewilderment and/or disapproval of this move. Yes, in a vacuum, the Fried promotion makes a lot of sense; but after the rushing of Swanson last year, the needless major-league debut of Albies this past week, the hyper-accelerated schedule heretofore for Acuña, I can see why it'd have the first-blush look of a haphazard or ill-conceived move.

Great post sir

Fried is an anagram for Fredi.

Just something to think about.

"Well, pardner, the youth movement continues as the Braves welcome number one prospect Max Fried to the Show."

"Yeah, Chip. You know, I've been hearing a lot of grumbling from people who follow the Braves asking why they seem to be rushing all of these prospects up to the Big Leagues. Well, it's like the Braves' organist told me: sometimes you've got to play even if it's not in the best interest of the team. But, it will be interesting to see if Fried can manage to stay inside the ball and not try to do too much, as that will be the tell-tale sign of he's ready for this level."

"Yeah, you know it's really starting to get the feeling of the late 80's around here when the Braves were starting to graduate all of their young talent to the big club, gearing up for that great run in the 90's. And pardner, I personally would like to see them don those powdered uniforms again."

"...Sure..."

"Alright, when we come back we will see if the Braves can sniff out a win against the Fish."

Yeah. Because using them in the pen for 10 days absolutely ruined the careers of David Price, Chris Sale, Lance Lynn, Woody Williams, Derek Lowe, Ryan Dempster, C. J. Wilson, Chuck Finley, Charlie Hough, Wilbur Wood, Keny Rogers, David Wells, and Dave Stewart among so many others.

I sure hope the guys who made the same call on all of them were fired immediately. What a bunch of idiots those guys were.

It's ten days for crying out loud - get over yourselves.

Carlos Martinez.

Brewers doing it with Hader now.

I think S-Rod trade is just clearing payroll next year. I doubt it is tipping any imminent move.

Given his injury and struggles and age and history seems like a good idea.

I'm really not clear why the Fried promotion was controversial exc or that it was surprising.

But he's pitched 10 straight scoreless andirs pretty much the definition of low risk.

There are not any real service time, financial, or competition issues here.

Teams do this all the time. It really should not be controversial

The Braves are unloading payroll to save money because they simply need to save money. They had to get permission just to add Adams and his meager salary before they acquired him, so it's obvious they are operating right against the very top of their payroll ceiling.

No need to try to make this more complicated than it is.
