Russia Collusion Scandal (aka A Leftist fantasy)

Carter Page, a foreign policy adviser to President Trump’s campaign whose visit to Moscow during the election has drawn scrutiny, sent an email to fellow Trump aides during his trip describing “a private conversation” with a senior Russian official who spoke favorably of the Republican candidate, according to records released late Monday by congressional investigators.

Page also wrote that he had been provided “incredible insights and outreach” by Russian lawmakers and “senior members” of Russian President Vladi*mir Putin’s administration during the trip.

The email appeared to contradict earlier statements by Page, who had said he had only exchanged brief greetings with the senior Russian official, Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich, after he delivered a speech at a Russian university.

In his July 2016 note, Page wrote that Dvorkovich had “expressed strong support for Mr. Trump and a desire to work together toward devising better solutions in response to a vast range of current international problems.”

Per Business Insider:
Asked whether he had ever met the overseas professor who told Papadopoulos about the Kremlin's dossier of incriminating Clinton emails, Joseph Misfud, Page at first said "No."

But he then seemed to backtrack: "I - you know, there may have been a greeting," he said. "I have no recollection of ever interacting with him in any way, shape or form...I have no personal relationship with him."

He was also really evasive in answering questions about meeting with Rosneft. Lots of "might have" and "don't recall."

Any reason why Fusion GPS met with the Russian lawyer before and after Trump Jr's meeting?

Gordon told POLITICO in a series of exchanges that he wasn’t involved in any wrongdoing and that he wasn’t aware of any suspect activities by Manafort or other campaign officials or advisers. He said investigators were probing other people involved in pushing the platform change that the Trump campaign opposed, though he would not identify them.

"Investigators are rightly looking into whether or not crimes were committed by individuals connected to Ukraine, including possible FARA violations and other illegal activities,” Gordon wrote, referring to the Foreign Agents Registration Act. “I applaud them for conducting a thorough investigation as there are clearly two sides to the GOP Platform controversy."

Gordon said it would be up to Mueller to reveal whether the special counsel’s office had reached out to him or interviewed him, and he declined to provide specifics of his talks with congressional investigators except to say that they covered a range of topics. He agreed to speak on the record to POLITICO only via text message exchanges, given what he said was the sensitivity of the investigations and efforts by some Trump opponents to thrust him into the middle of them.

The “stakes are too high for error. Prison, impeachment proceedings, lawsuits,” he wrote in one text message.

“Impeachment of a President at stake,” he wrote in another. “Would prefer people stop trying to use my head as a battering ram.”

Now a real answer?

I could be mistaken, but my recollection is that Fusion GPS was working for the American law firm that was retained to argue the Prevezon case in US court, in collaboration with Ms. V. So, while they might have some conflict-of-interest questions to answer, it's hard to parse how you build the narrative that they were working in favor of Russian interests on the Prevezon case, but somehow were Clintonite moles trying to sabotage the Trump campaign. The more likely answer is that they were purely mercenary.

PS, the Prevezon case was settled for peanuts by Jeff Session's DoJ. That kinda spoils the narrative, IMO.

Trump campaign had NO CONTACT with Russia.

OK, Flynn had contact with Russia.

Flynn and Sessions had contact with Russia.

Flynn and Sessions. Also, Don Jr., Manafort and Kushner.

OK: Flynn, Sessions, Don Jr., Manafort, Kushner, Page and Papadopoulos. But THAT'S IT!
(Maybe.)

My read on Flynn is that he attached himself to Trump because he thought it would be an expedient way to get paid, gain power, and work the system. He seemed like a potent mix of ego, rapacity, and grievance. He thought that he could manipulate Trump, be a power behind the scenes, avenge himself on the establishment that ****canned him, and make bank in the process.

The fact that this Gulen plot reportedly made it past the spitballing stage is nearly incredible--not to mention appalling--and would be front page news in a sane world. In retrospect it's not surprising that he was angling for immunity months ago ("General Flynn has a story to tell," said his attorney). If his crime was limited to allegedly lying to investigators about his conversation with the Russian Ambassador, seems like he'd be content to brazen it out.
