Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Chatwood was an interesting target, but he's one I would not have signed unless he was a serious deal. He's seeming getting overpaid here and I don't see that as a good idea. But I think he was always destined to be the sleeper that everyone had targeted as a sleeper that gets bid up.

He has those radical splits away from Coors and looks like he has a decent profile to succeed overall. But that's not necessarily unusual among rockies pitchers and I struggle to remember breakouts from Coors refugees. I'm sure there must be some and maybe a big one, but not remember it off the top of my head.

Anyway he walks way too many guys. Maybe that changes when the ball behaves differently and he isn't terrified, but it seems iffy
 
I'd expect about 5 wins from Chatwood over the next three years. Cubs paying about 8M/expected win. Neither an overpay nor an underpay given the market last off-season.

My guess is Chacin and Fiers will sign for a similar AAV on a 2 year deal. I'd be interested in a deal of that sort to round out our rotation. If we are patient we might get one of them at a discount.

Wonder if that means they know they're out of the Ohtani sweepstakes? They already had a full-time DH they were going to have to play in the OF to give him ABs there and a really good leadoff hitter in Segura.

Maybe they're trying to trade Gordon for pitching and eat some money???

We knew Stanton, Gordon and Prado were as good as gone.

Nick Neidert, FV 45 pitcher according to FG preseason 2017 list.

Seems about right for Gordon and his whole contract.
 
M's are getting all of Gordon's contract plus $1M in pool space for Nick Neidert.

Teams are stocking up on pool space to try to lure Ohtani. This is the most valuable this pool space will ever be.

We pulled the trigger too quick....even though I am very happy JJ is someone else’s problem.
 
Someone mentioned re-signing Cunningham as a 5th OF - he signed a minor league deal with a camp invite with the Pirates.

He's a good guy to stash in AAA. His OBP numbers in AAA have improved the last two seasons (over .400 last year). Good move by the Bucs.
 
Having followed Ohtani for years in the NPB, I'm really excited to see if his dual-talents translate here. I think he's ultimately destined to be a pitcher, but we shall see.
