Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Boston is reportedly shopping JBJ in case they land a power hitter in LF. He would be expensive, but the Braves would have the best defensive OF in the game with that acquisition.

Man sign me up for Yelich or JBJ... those guys are worth a premium price

Giants get Evan Longoria for Christian Arroyo, Denard Span, Matt Krook and Stephen Woods.

Damn thats not that much.

It's not. The pitchers are flyers and Span is jsut to offset money, and it also says the Rays are sending some cash.

Hell, this may be the offseason to flip prospects

Longoria isn't that valuable, as evidenced by the fact Span was included to offset some salary AND the Rays had to pay SF additional cash.

I think the Rays did pretty well here. They unloaded a large contract for the Giants best prospect...who will immediately replace Longoria at 3B for league minimum.

I'm not so sure this signals a full scale rebuild for the Rays. They just flipped an expensive 3B for a cheap one. They will almost certainly trade Odorizzi...just not for MAdams.

Yeah, looking at Longo's contract he's owed $81M over the next 5 years (not counting the option year). If he's a 3 war player for 5 years you could say he has about $39M in value and Arroyo is at $38M.

Longoria is squarely into his decline phase. He probably projects closer to 10 WAR over the next 5 years than 15.

I sure as hell would have wanted Longo if they only had to give that up. My goodness.

Still, you have to think we put in a really good offer for Archer. We need to be in on Archer or Yelich (if he's truly available) this offseason.

The Rays could very well blow things up and deal Archer. In fact, there is a very strong and logical case to be made that they should. I just don't think trading an old 3B for a young 3B who is ready to step in immediately signals a fire sale is imminent.

And I definitely don't think the Braves have any business trading for Archer when they are projected to win 75 games. It is asinine to pay for Archer now and carry the risk inherent in pitchers just so he can contribute to a hopeful 2019 contender.

The Giants are going down the road the Phillies took a few years ago. They are aging and need to rebuild, yet they just keep doubling down on older and older players.

When they rebuild they might be a prime target for the Braves to trade with.

It's really hard to believe the Giants just traded their best prospect though. They better hope this gamble pays off.
