Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

A few years ago that would have been huge, but both of them now are on the backside of their career. I expect them to be decent, but not what they used to be. And Cutch is a FA after the season right?

Cutch is a FA after the season which means he's gonna ball out for that last big payday. He's only 31 so that's definitely not on the backside of his career. If Longo can stay healthy he's a force as well.

The Giants have taken a GIANT step forward this offseason if this trade goes through! Cutch and Longoria WOW!!!

A giant step towards trying to construct an analogy to the 2003–04 Lakers, but a gianter step towards actually constructing an analogy to the 2016–17 Bulls.

The Giants are just trying to make the most of their last years of contention. they are going to hit the ground hard either way once its closed. I can respect it. If their rotation is healthy they have a decent shot at winning any playoff series they are in.

Giants have done well to pick up McCutchen and Longoria without giving up Shaw, Ramos or Beede.

McCutcheon at least should be moveable if they don't end up being in the race. If he's having a vintage season they might even get something nice out of it.

Apparently the Pirates got Kyle Crick in the deal. Not sure if that is all they got, but if it is... damn.

Is it just me, or have all the prospect returns in trades this offseason seemed extremely light?

Seems like it—though the Stanton and Ozuna deals feel like special circumstances, and a lot of the other traded players likewise had contracts and contexts mitigating their returns. Nonetheless, the current climate makes it all the more absurd that the Marlins blog linked in the Yelich thread seriously thought Acuña could reasonably be considered a potential piece in a Braves–Marlins deal.

I saw one guy say Gohara, Fried, Acuna AND Soroka smh!

Headley for free.

Cutch for essentially free.

The Braves could have built a WC contender this season without giving up any real prospects if they had any money to spend.

Luckily these types of trades should be available next year as well.

This is the formula I've been advocating for the Braves next off-season. Acquire productive players who because of their contracts don't have much surplus value.

I’d rather the Braves really have the 2018 payroll of $130M everyone claims they will have and would have done both.

Sure, but if we could only do one, I think we made the right choice.

We will have about 60M to play with next off-season. I would use the money to acquire 3 productive but low surplus value players. This will enable us to keep all of our core prospects and players. While our needs could change based on how players develop, the 3 players I would choose would play left, third and take up a spot in the rotation.

I get third and left but how do you see the rotation playing out next season?
