Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

More craziness: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/01/quick-hits-moustakas-blackmon-kipnis.html

If Mous can really be had for 3/39, how could a team like the Braves justify not getting involved?

No matter what you think of Mous, getting him for that kind of money is extremely good value. Either that GM is clueless, or some team is going to score some bargains this offseason.

This would have been a great offseason to be projected for 80+ wins and have $40M to spend. The first Kemp trade likely prevented the Braves from taking advantage of this potentially depressed FA market.

All things being equal, I'd rather have Duvall than Frazier. Duvall is younger and more likely to be a 2-3 WAR player over the next 2-3 years than Frazier is. I just don't see Frazier aging well. His tools are already declining pretty hard.

That being said, I highly doubt Cincy will be giving him away for peanuts and Frazier will likely end up signing at a well below market rate. I think Frazier is the clear choice here.

I loved the Kemp deal when it happened, but it is extremely unfortunate that this historically depressed market has developed in the meantime. I wonder if there is any chance that it could depress players like Frazier's price enough for us to make a run at him? Or maybe Nunez will come in at a bargain bin price? I haven't lost hope that we can at least take advantage of the current market to some extent.

In the slowest offseason in the history of baseball, the Brewers nearing a deal with an undisclosed team involving an undisclosed OFer qualifies as news.

Now we can speculate that the Braves are sending a pitcher for one of their OFers...because we may as well make guesses in the absence of any actual happenings.

I’m guessing...Teheran for Santana.

Hope so. Or maybe Shaw. Crasnick just speculated it was an OF, not certain who’s involved.

Was just about to post that but I can see Teheran+ for Santana or maybe even Folty+ for Santana.

Santana is a very hard guy to value, but so is Teheran.

Is Santana a 3+ win slugger with below defense in LF? Or is he 1-2 win above average hitter with terrible OF defense?

Is Teheran a washed up 1-2 win #4? Or is he going to regain his command and be a durable 3 win middle of the rotation fixture?

Teheran for Santana would be a pretty even gamble for both sides, and it would allow the Brewers to avoid the FA market and clear their OF logjam a bit.

Good point. Shaw also makes sense.

Maybe the Braves are going to get both!!

That would be awesome to knock out 2 birds with one stone!

Inciarte

Albies

Freeman

Santana

Markakis

Flowers/Suzuki

Shaw

Swanson

That's definitely a .500 or better lineup!

His defense isn't close to being Kemp bad which is definitely an upgrade!

Hmm - I would hate to see Julio go but I think you would have to make that deal. LF long term is a big hole in this organization right now while SP options are its strongest. It makes too much sense not to make a deal like that.

Not sure that they would do that straight up considering his value is trending up and JT's is trending down. Adding Viz would close the gap though.

Would anyone be opposed to JT and Viz for Santana?

If it is the Braves trading for Santana I could also see Newcomb or Folty being involved. Folty had two of his better games vs the Brewers this past season while Teheran had his worst game against them. But if it's Teheran it would likely also be to shed his salary and use it to sign someone via free agency to go along with Santana.

Teheran for Braun trade off would make some sense...giving us right handed power...both him and Teheran coming off down seasons

Then move neck at the deadline or earlier when Acuña is ready

That's not happening, Braun doesn't want to come here and he is making 20 million this season to Teheran's 8 million or so. If we make a trade with the Brewers it will likely be for Santana if an outfielder. They have been shopping Santana according to reports.

If AA moved Kemp only to replace him with Braun by trading Teheran for Braun, then I'd be supporting that silly thread already questioning AA.

AA is smarter than that IMO. That said, I could see him having interest in trading for Santana.

Definitely plausible, but Santana may not be good enough defensively to pique AA’s interests. I agree that Braun is extremely unlikely.

I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see some sort of pitching for an OFer trade going down with the Brewers though. It’s probably one of the more likely scenarios we are still discussing.
