Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

I think it's a mistake not finding a place for him on a non-contending team. EL agrees.

Larry: Breakout Braves prospect from outside you and Kiley’s top 32?

Eric A Longenhagen: I think Anyelo Gomez is going to be very good.

Yeah I liked his stuff. Wonder if the decreased velocity indicated arm issues. Or could be that AA getting bit by the contending bug.

Braves must have seen something with Gomez we aren't privy to. It is not like AA (or the Dodgers) to dump promising arms like this.

The Braves still have a Rule 5 pick to deal with.

The Braves technically had two Rule 5 picks on their roster, as injury-plagued right-hander Dan Winkler’s Rule 5 status is still in effect despite missing much of the last three seasons due to injuries. Winkler and the other intriguing arms in Atlanta’s system created a tough road for Gomez to find a spot on the 25-man roster, and he didn’t help his case with a rocky performance (10.80 ERA) over 8 1/3 Spring Training innings.

What do you mean? I think a potted plant would look good in LF.

Beyond his declining stats, the guy has always struck me as a total a$$.

I’ve always been a fan of Bautista’s, almost entirely because I tend to root for late-boomers. Having said that, bringing him to Cobb County in 2018 seems, at best, pointless—and in general a lot of the new regime’s recent marginalia has been somewhat head-scratching.

Nestor Cortes, who I wanted to see us take in the Rule 5, looks like he made the Orioles.

I wanted him too, like him as a reliever option and possibly starter. I sure wish we had him instead of wasting money on old man Sanchez coming off a terrible season.

Cards DFA Breyvic Valera.

Sure would've rather have had him than Flaherty. Afraid AA might've jumped the gun there.

They also DFA'd Josh Lucas who had a great spring unlike Valera who was quite bad offensively. Given our bullpen has Carle in it I'd like to see Josh Lucas claimed and Carle dropped. I'd be fine with claiming Valera too if he has options, then just option him to AAA for depth. We'd need to DFA someone to make room though.
