GDT: PHILS vs BRAVES [Game 3]

Let’s not assume there is a critical shortage of starting pitchers who can go deep in games just because the flavor of the week in “analytics” is extending bullpens.

Some analysts think they see an inefficiency where they can use deep bullpens to counteract pitcher fatigue and hitters developing familiarity with the starter during games.

This may well be a great strategy for certain teams or in short time frames.

But the underlying ability of the starting pitchers probably hasn’t suddenly dipped greatly just because it’s a hot topic for people that read blogs.

So it's just as I thought: I'm not inventing a problem to fit a solution; you're inventing a problem to fit your quip and serve your sawhorse.

(a) I never said that "there is a critical shortage of starting pitchers who can go deep in games", nor did I ever imply that "the underlying ability of the starting pitchers [has] suddenly dipped greatly". Those are both your interpolations and impositions.

I simply said that this recent greater focus on overstocking rosters with non-starter or spot-starter, talented-but-flawed pitchers—and the "two bullpens" approach in general—may mean that "legitimate TOR-type pitchers who can not only stick, but provide >6 quality IP, [become] more valuable; but those guys were already pretty scarce/valuable anyways."

So, again, that's not saying what you need it to say to make your cutting rejoinder, and thus I understand why you'd twist it just so to give you an opening to ascend the soapbox.

(b) I don't even read the blogs?

(c) As I believe 50 pointed out the other day, this isn't even a new revelation—that pitchers' production and efficiency tends to decline, on the whole, the longer they pitch into games / the more times they see a lineup. The data's been there for decades, so ascribing such an insight to flavor-of-the-month "analytics" is disingenuous at best. The only thing that's changed is more teams, thanks to the success of a few outliers, are starting to act on such information, and act on it quite decisively in some cases. It's unclear if they're acting on the data in the ideal or most efficient manner, but it's hardly a latterly "invented" problem.

Tucker eliminated my bulldogs while a Florida Gator in a super regional game to advance to college World Series. It was a hr btw

The flavor of the week is exactly the idea that the “third time through the order” is a new discovery that deserves a new solution.

I appreciate the idea has merit. It’s not really even a new fix but the logistics of implementation it are dubious.

I’m not making a personal attack on you. I responded to one thing you said about a shortage of pitchers who can go three tiles through an order. You asked me to elaborate and I did.

I didn’t mean to suggest that you read blogs. I don’t know whether you do or not and I wasn’t really picturing you specifically doing that when I made my comment.

No offense or shade intended towards you. Sorry if it seemed like it was aimed at you.

I’m still a fansby. Hoping to see real progress this season at the plate, and a lot more stability with the glove (where he was already good, if inconsistent).
