GDT: Cubs @ Braves 5/15

It is sad that we had to lose this game partially due to baseball’s stupidity. It’s just one game, but that was an incredibly easy call.

Also, Viz has done this crap for years and continues to show me need a true closer. I like him, but he’s just way too wild.

Never liked him. 70% of the time (even if he gives up no runs)....it’s a stressful event.

I think he's a great bullpen piece, but we need to try Winkler or Minter in the role for a bit. I'd love to get a high-leverage arm via trade or free agency.

Minter scares me as much, if not more, than Viz.

Only one currently in BP that I'd give an extended look to is Winkler but I'm not sure about his effectiveness vs LHH.

AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS Avg OBP SLG OPS
vs. Left 21 3 4 0 1 0 3 2 1 6 0 0 .190 .292 .286 .577
vs. Right 40 2 3 1 0 0 2 3 0 21 0 0 .075 .140 .100 .240

Sorry about line up-- it's correct before posting.

I've said this numerous times regarding college football replays, but it is every bit as valid in baseball.

You don't need a current or former umpire working the replay booth. Umps/Refs have a natural predisposition towards protecting their own, even more so than cops. The calls that are reviewable are not plays that require an umpire's judgment - anyone with experience in the sport in question can review to see if the play was called correctly. Penalties in football, and balls and strikes in baseball, are not reviewable plays anyway. It doesn't take a skilled umpire to watch a play on video to determine if a tag was made, if a runner beat the ball on a force out, or if a potential home run stayed fair or cleared the yellow line.

I'd prefer to see retired players, former coaches or managers, or executives making the final judgment on reviewed plays. I guarantee the rate of overturned plays would go up, as would the accuracy of the decisions. Allowing officials to review their own mistakes is like letting convicts be judges for criminal trials.

Seems like folks agitate against the way closers are used and then the first time they blow up want to put the next guy they perceive as the best pitcher right back in the same role.

I can live with Viz closing so long as he is mostly effective. Winkler may be more valuable matching up when he's needed and putting out fires than he would be starting clean innings with leads.

To be a serious WS contender we’ll have to acquire a legit closer bc we don’t have one on the roster imo.

it also seems we will have to start paying off umps to make the actually correct call. not even just favor us. just make the right call.

atlanta has been fine closing games this year. but viz is still too shaky for me. i'm not sure there's a clear solution, tho. i'd prob give winkler a shot however.

I think I need to see more of a collapse before I move Vizcaino out of the role.

Granted, I predicted he would collapse and lose the role before the season started, but I'm not hoping for that to happen.

see, IMO, more collapses are bound to happen. i wouldn't mind a preemptive move.

Thought it more than a little interesting that Snitker mentioned that he felt he could use Winkler as an option during his press conference after the game.

Not sure that he or Carle could handle the job long-term, but stranger things have obviously happened. At the very least, I might give one or both a couple shots if it did nothing but send the message to Viz and Minter that if they don't start throwing more quality strikes that they're liable to start finding themselves pitching in the 6th and 7th innings.

Why do you have to have a set guy? If viz has better numbers vs the upcoming batters, use him. If it's all LHHs, use AJ. You get the point

This is pretty much Kimbrel to Atlanta 2019 confirmed. Lol

Would love to have him back obviously, but he's making $13m/yr right now. I think Enscheff predicted he'd be at least $15m/yr as a FA. Don't see it happening, but maybe AA and LM figure out a way to get it done

Unless there is accountability in the replay system there is absolutely no reason for the replay umps to do their job correctly. They can still chalk it up to not enough evidence to overturn even when the evidence is overwhelming.
