Craig Kimbrel For Braves Closer In 2019

So, guys that wouldn't be blockbuster type trades:

Kole Calhoun LAA, signed $10.5M in 19, $14M in 20, coming off a down year at 1 WAR but has been in the 3 WAR range for much of the last 5 years. He'll be 31.

Josh Reddick Astros, signed $13M per through 20, will be 32. Astros may move to open RF for Tucker. Maybe package for McCann if Braves want to go that way.

Randal Grichuk, BJ's, probably make about $4M and 2 years service time left, good for 1-2 WAR most likely and BJ's need to rebuild.

Dexter Fowler, Cards, $14.5 annually through 21. Diminished value, probably wouldn't cost anything and Cards might eat some money.

Jason Heyward, Cubs, about $21M annually through 23. Cubs would have to pay a lot of cash.

Zobrist and Happ, Cubs, not sure why they would move Zobrist.

Kyle Schwarber for LF, Cubs, Acuna to right. Probably only happen if Cubs go after Harper

David Peralta, D backs, would cost a ton

Puig or Pederson if Dodgers go Harper

Celevaland: You might take a chance on Brad Zimmer coming back

Hanniger from Seattle if they decide to rebuild.

Will Meyers, SD, would be expensive in terms of prospects and money

Corey Dickerson, Pirates, LF?

Nick Castellanos, Detroit

Pollock would be the FA but through trade there are a few. I know that the Pirates traded for Archer but they aren’t winning anything anytime soon so Marte wouldn’t be a bad target neither would Happ from the Cubs. I still wish we could have gotten Yelich somehow.

I'm sure a Yelich for Acuna trade is still on the table
 
The issue facing AA is that the FA OF market consists of Harper, Pollock...a huge gap...and then guys like Markakis.

If we assume the Braves can't afford Harper, and aren't willing to pay for CF defense in LF with Pollock (which they may actually be willing to do), then we have to start looking for trade scenarios somewhere along the lines of Yelich and Ozuna from last off season.

Which teams are going to blow things up and have a 3+ win OFer with 2+ years of control? Which teams have a log jam in the OF? Which teams might sign Harper and Pollock, thus creating a log jam in the OF?

The Astros fit. Possibly the Brewers. Dodgers too. Would the Giants blow things up and trade away Belt (how terrible would he be in LF)?
 
I want Harper, I don't care what anyone else says, but I think we make a legit run at Pollock when it's all said and done.
 
I’d like to paint Pollock into the picture, in the abstract. Would shake up the form of the team a bit.

In art, I prefer the themes of the former to be processed through more abstract or at least imagist/objectivist* milleux. Realism killed the novel, at various stretches of its brief (~300 year) history; and it still activity contributes to the commodity culture surrounding/suffusing prose today. “Baroque” probably best defines my sensibilities, if you want a generalizing label.

*(This means something different than “Randian”, in poetics; think George Oppen.)

I don't think much needs to be spent on C and RP.
i wouldn't be surprised to see them go all-in on Pollock for LF. he's a good fit and it doesn't seem big money needs to be spent anywhere else.
 
Length of contract is the likely deal breaker with Pollock. I'd be willing to do 3 years with an option for a 4th at an AAV of 18M. I strongly suspect that won't be enough to land him. In which case I move on to alternatives.

It seems like, if a large contract is to be signed with some FA, Pollock or Grandal are the likeliest candidates, with the other spot filled via trade or lesser/platoon signing. That is, unless Not Trout is really motivated to stay in the NL East and stick it to the Zombie Expos.

There’s also the definite possibility that no large contract is palatable, and/or the palatable offers the Braves make are rejected. In which case I’d like to see Anthopoulos try to absorb a 2-3 year contract of a 2-3 war player who has limited surplus value (and thus is cost-limited in terms of prospect capital).

I'm more of a Lawrence Durrell kinda guy. Come to think of it his prose quite often drifts toward the baroque.

The Braves are also in a total debt dilemma.

It may be impossible to add a contract of any significant length.

true. i wouldn't want anymore than 4 years, and even that's a little much. however the money wouldn't be an issue for me. would you be that opposed to like 3/66? i'm not sure i would be.

i'm super hesitant to commit long term to a catcher. it's probably because we've gotten lucky with flowers/suzuki, but i'd prefer to pursue someone like that again to match with flowers for another year. kick the catcher can down the road.
 
We should no doubt have plenty of money for Pollock if we want him. We Markakis gone it frees up another 11 million so it should be pretty easy to add another big contract while handing out some extensions. I just pray they didn’t get Duvall to be a full time guy next year.
