Braves to get Britton in free agency?

This team can't afford to pay that much for a closer if they're filling more important holes.

We definitely need to add 1 or 2 high leverage arms, but am I the only one okay with Vizcaino closing again next season? Dude is as filthy as they come.

Do not want Viz and his heart attack saves next season. I mean he's not bad. But he's just okay.

The Braves may be Britton's first choice, but I'd be surprised if using up that much of the $40M-$45M available is AA's first choice when there are other more pressing holes to fill.

I suppose it all depends on how much he is willing to take, as usual.

Gonna have to spend money somewhere and signing a good closer to a 3 year deal with a 4th year option isn't a bad way to spend it. This is a good team already. Supplementing it with luxury players like Britton (or Kimbrel) is definitely something that needs to be considered.

If we did trade for Peralta he’ll cost around 7.5 million so that would leave around 33 million to pay for say Descalso, Britton, and another bench piece and even Grandal if we wanted to. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be loaded going into spring training.

The numbers don’t really agree. I wouldn’t be comfortable handing Vizcaino the ball with a tight lead in the playoffs.

Like just happened not three days ago?

Also, what numbers don’t agree?

9.39 k/9 isn't great for a RP.
he really isn't "as filthy as they come." he's solid. he's far from a stud.
also he almost blew that lead. like it was probably a 50/50 shot he was going to. it certainly didn't make *me* feel great.

He's dealt with some injuries the last two years and wasn't all the way back in his recovery from an achilles injury when he returned this year. I think it would be helpful to have someone like him that would have the domino effect of pushing everyone else in the pen to a less high leverage role. I'm guessing it will take a 3-4 year deal with an AAV of 13-15M per year to land him.

I’m just going by his stuff. He was injured this year. The previous two years, his k/9 was 10 and 11.6, respectively. His problem is command, so that’s why he’ll probably never be an elite closer. He’s only 27 though, while Britton and Kimbrel are on the wrong side of 30. My point is, we should be trying to get a couple quality high leverage guys, but closer isn’t really close to the most pressing hole to fill right now. That’s why I’m cool with rolling with Viz, with a better supporting cast, instead of using a chunk of our limited payroll on an “elite” closer.

On Britton: he hasn't really had closer peripherals since 2016. I don't think his tenure with Yankees necessarily resurrected his stock either though he was a little better by the numbers in September. I would be a little surprised if he fetched a premium price in free agency. I'm not sure his joining the Braves would necessarily be as the closer.

Looking at Atlanta's roster and the available free agents, I'm kind of coming around to the idea that maybe an investment in the back end of the bullpen makes sense. We are in the era of the expanded bullpen and shoring up the backend necessarily should improve the front end.

If you take Atlanta out of the running for the premium free agents and avoid the idea of committing relatively big money to the second tier of always injured outfielders settling into the back nine, you are left with catcher, the bench, and the trade market for improving the lineup. Should be money to address the pen if that is the case.

Just one way to go.

The problem with Vizcaino is that he has to pitch regularly to stay sharp and he doesn't appear to be durable enough to do that. When it comes to flat-out stuff, he's awesome, but the durability issue really dents his consistency.

I like Viz, but would prefer him as a 7th or 8th inning guy. If we had him, Britton and Minter, that would be a pretty strong group to handle innings 7-9.

I don't think we'll go after a big name reliever this year. If you look at the leader boards of relievers there are not a lot of "big names" there this year. It's younger guys who got their shot and took advantage of it or starters turned relievers who flourished. Also, if you look at the relievers who signed last year most of them took a step backwards or were injured. It's hard to find many who continued their dominance or took a step forward. I think AA will see this trend and act accordingly.

I agree. We dont need to be spending on the bullpen. We need to develop cheap relievers so we can afford to spend more on other positions. Dont tell me we cant afford to spend 30 million on an elite position player but we can afford 15 million on a closer to pitch 70 innings.

AA might see Britton as a buy low candidate. He returned to pitching before regaining full strength in his leg after the achilles injury. I don't think his results this year are fully reflective of what he can do.

I'd never persuade against a buy low situation. If we can get him for under makret value, then yes it's definitely a consideration.
