Around The Majors 2019

I think the problem is most teams with pitchers to trade will want prospects, not MLB players that are about to get expensive. Maybe the Indians might have some interest in Camargo (plus others) for Hand. But considering his value is down, I don't think he'd return as much as we'd hope.

It looks like the Indians will be adding not subtracting. They are 10 behind the Twins but 4 above .500 and still in the WC race. They won't be making any moves until closer to the deadline most likely. They will likely want bats. I could see a Inciarte/Camargo deal with them but not for Hand unless they fall completely out.

Camargo's poor play killed Camargo's playing time. He was getting plenty of PAs, despite anything the "Camargo needs more PAs to stay sharp" apologists wanted to believe.

I have to imagine every other team knows what Camargo is, and his trade value is pretty limited. A team like the Giants who are likely looking for a quick rebuild may value MLB ready players more than others, so there might be a deal to be made there for the Braves lower end MLB players like Camargo and Duvall.

Crawford has crashed this year. How smart is the giants' FO? Could they possibly see camargo as a SS?

I don’t think anyone is suggesting Markakis doesn’t need to have his PAs vs LHP limited.

The question is whether or not Camargo’s career xwOBA of .333 and likely poor defense is the correct guy to take those extra PAs. I still think a RHH OFer May be on the shopping list next month.

shouldn't we see what Duvall actually has?

3 man bench (excluding the catcher) makes it a tricky choice. Who does the RHH OF replace. If Joyce, then we no longer have a good LHH pinch hitter. If Camargo, we lose our best infield depth. The logical guy to replace would be Culberson.

The equation changes somewhat when Ender comes back.

I think the issue with Camargo is that he hasn't turned out to be a reliable OF. If he was, he certainly would be out there more often, especially giving Markakis a rest against LHP. Maybe when Ender returns, we will see some games with Acuna in RF on days when Markakis needs a rest. Of course, Ender doesn't exactly eat up LHP either. I guess we'll have to wait to see it unfold. I likely hang on to Camargo unless someone else really wants him. There may be a lot of shuffling in the off-season centered on what happens with Donaldson.

Agreed. Compounded by the fact that Culberson appears to be Riley's defensive caddy takes another option away somewhat.

I can't imagine any non-injury related reason Culberson will ever be removed from this roster though...

Do the Dodgers run with a 4 man bench? It seems sub-optimal when pitchers are being shuttled back and forth to AAA so often.

I get that, but it's been reported that teams believe the Indians will deal Hand because of the volatility that comes with relievers because of the type of package he's likely to return at the deadline with a bunch of teams needing BP help. Carrasco being out indefinitely and Kluber'd injury also puts a wet blanket over playoff aspirations.

The issue is that Snit refuses to rest Markakis, which should be strategically done vs LHP.

Snit allowed Markakis' early season success to scuttle the "get everyone more rest" plan. When Camargo wasn't getting results it made it hard to sit Markakis in favor of a guy playing out of position who wasn't hitting at all.

Now we are stuck watching a scenario where Markakis is predictably wearing down, predictably being bad vs LHP, and no clear option to platoon with him because of Duvall's face plant. Even when Ender comes back it's not like the Braves are going to sit Riley on the bench while he platoons with Markakis, so there still won't be a clear answer.

After the Braves refused to add a better RHH OF option, the correct answer was, and still is, to get Camargo in there vs some LHP, despite the bad results he's had so far in 2019. The absolute worst case scenario is Camargo never gets going, but at least Markakis is rested. Best case scenario is Camargo gets going, Markakis is rested, and that spot in the lineup starts producing no matter which SP the Braves are facing.

The Braves may need to get a RHH OFer next month to solve this problem, or consider expanding Culberson's role a bit.

Eh, Culberson is better infield depth right now. I'd rather see if Duvall can get back to what he was.

Yeah. The Dodgers currently have a 13-man staff and I believe that's the way they usually operate. Their weakest position player when they are full strength is David Freese.
