GDT 8/14/19: Punting the puppies

Taking Matz out was not a bad move.

Why do you think that? He had 79 pitches and was cruising. Ps, this is what Callaway had to say after the game.

Steven Matz was not injured. Mickey Callaway made the move to take out Matz at 79 pitches "because we had the best reliever in baseball sitting down there."

"I'll make that move 100 times out of 100," Callaway said. "That's the right move, in my mind."

I say that because Matz was going through the 3rd time through the order and just gave up 3 rockets the previous inning. Lugo is a boss, and got BABIP’d to death that inning. If those balls after the Duvall hit hadn’t found holes no one would be saying ****.

And look what happened the next two innings when their BABIP luck normalized, their bullpen shut us down.

The “he was cruising” justification for leaving a pitcher in is stupid. Folks need to stop saying it because it’s wrong. The third time through the order penalty doesn’t care how well a pitcher handles the lineup the first 2 times. We just saw Folty “cruising” through the lineup twice, and then get shelled the third time through. People really need to pull their heads out of their asses and learn about the modern game.

Removing Matz in a close game for a RHP rather than letting him face JD and Duvall a third time in a close game was undeniably the correct move in a playoff game. That type of BP usage probably isn’t sustainable for a full season, but these next few weeks are essentially the start of the playoffs for the Mets.

I turned the game off and went to bed after the latest Camargo blunder and the subsequent bogus overturned call. I was fuming. I don’t think I’ve ever been this mad at a single player before.

I hope to wake up to see Camargo has been demoted. I don’t recall ever seeing a player being such a negative in every single facet of the game. He literally can’t do anything. Nothing. He can’t even lay down a bunt. He’s worse than replacement level.

The problem is who is going to replace him? Sux that we traded Demeritte away, cause he would have been the perfect replacement and he's been pretty good in a small sample in Detroit.

There has to be someone who isn’t a liability and can play multiple positions in a pinch. It’s not like they’ll be playing a bunch like Camargo is now. Just give Culberson the job until Swanson returns.

Camargo is fine for how we use him. But when playing anything other than third he needs to be defensively subbed out when you have the lead. That was an error on snit.

Dang I go to sleep after the 8th and see (once again), the 9th gets crazy

I’m beginning to think it doesn’t matter who closes....the 9th just seems cursed this year. It has to be mental at this point. There is no other reason so many guys would fail.

We need to abandon this notion of BP roles. Just use certain guys in certain situations and then leave them in if they are hitting spots. I am ok with Blevins being used on lefties or for a scrub inning durning blowouts. But we have 7 bullpen guys who can get guys out. We don’t need to say you are the 9th inning guy or 8th inning guy. Put a guy in that fits a situation with another guy or two on the ready. 3 outs in the 9th are no different than 3 outs in the 7th.

“I was just unlucky,” Lugo said. “I thought I made a bunch of good pitches. They didn’t really hit anything hard.”

Before last night Lugo had retired 32 of the last 33 hitters he had faced.

He has gone 2 innings quite often. It is the right move to try to get 2 innings from Lugo in a one-run game like this. The only quibble might be whether you have Matz pitch the 7th and have Lugo pitch 8th and 9th. I think what Callaway did is hard to second guess. But there is a lot of second guessing among Metropolitans fans. They make Braves fans seem rational.
