Being Italian, I knew the country was doomed when I read a statement by a government official urging people not to hug and kiss each other while greeting.

If the CDC came out today and announced that they predict between 20,000 and 50,000 Americans will die from Coronavirus, people would lose their minds. There would be absolute panic. Interestingly, that's how many Americans have already died of flu this flu season.
Coronavirus is serious. People will die from it and we should be working to stop it. But the amount of over the top sensationalism isn't helping anything. I honestly fear the overreaction more than the disease at this point.

Agreed. It's dangerous to older people especially those with underlying conditions. But the vast majority of people, especially those under 50, are going to be fine. That's even if you get sick.

His stimulus package seems like a good idea.
I just wish he had more ideas outside of financial incentives. Luckily, local governments across the country seem to be doing a great job. Overall, the US is in good hands thanks to local teams.
Two things need to happen and I am not sure Trump will be able to deliver. 1) He needs to be better at comms and 2) the federal response needs to start prioritizing mitigate disease spread rather than softening the stock market crash. The stock market will rebound from this, but people can’t be resurrected. South Korea is an excellent role model for the world on how a central government should react to a pandemic.

If we could take measures to counter the seasonal flu, then we should. Obviously, that’s not realistic , so we have just come to terms and accept this as a natural cycle of life (not to mention we do have vaccines and antibodies that have helped lower the fatality rate).
I agree that over the top sensationalism isn’t helping, but neither is the constant comparisons to the flu. It’s giving off the wrong impression (especially to younger people) that “if I don’t have to worry about the flu then I don’t have worry about this”.

While true, young people need to take the most caution about spreading the disease since they are the ones going to work, large social gatherings, traveling, etc. We can’t be the reason grandma and grandpa die.

The comparisons to the flu are pretty good. They're both contagious respiratory illnesses that spread in similar ways (droplets, contaminated surfaces, etc) and a very small percentage of the time can be fatal. The problem occurs if you write off Coronavirus completely because it's similar to the flu. The correct result would be to become more aware of the flu and treat Coronavirus and flu with the proper amount of regard.
But what about Wrestlemania?
Also the current mortality rate of covid-19 for the under 50 crowd is slightly higher than the seasonal flu at ~0.2%. It's the older population that this really hurts.

I don’t disagree, especially the last sentence. I think it’s spot on.
However, we don’t know what a full cycle of COVID-19 looks like yet (or if this will return) and there’s no certainty around the fatality rate and how it effects different demographic types (i.e., why does Italy have such a high fatality rate). So I think these conclusions are very premature which is why best practice is to be extremely cautious.

It feels very weird to be whining about sensationalism. The entire country of Italy has been shut down. The numbers for the flu are with a vaccine and people getting flu shots. We have no idea what the numbers on this are gonna end up like.

As has been mentioned but you still don't understand, the big worry isn't the deaths from Coronavirus, it will be how the virus overloads and cripples the health care systems. That will be when the real panic starts.
