The Coronavirus, not the beer

I wonder if all of these younger people who were careless enough to contract the virus will take proper precautions not to spread it.

Hopefully it just kind of magics itself away, because any option relying on public intelligence or compassion is DOA. And any option relying on decisive and responsible action from the government is the same. So, let's go magic.

How Germany Staffed Up Contact Tracing Teams To Contain Its Coronavirus Outbreak

Germany, a country of more than 83 million people, has flattened its coronavirus curve, dropping from a peak of more than 6,000 new cases a day to just around 600 now. Contact tracing by telephone is one tool the country has relied on.

"Public Health Authority, Pankow," says an operator, answering her phone before the first ring is over and identifying the Berlin district where she works. "So," she confirms with the caller, "you've had contact with someone who's tested positive."

Strong words from a Republican in Texas.

Also glad to see Governors Abbott and Ducey shed some of their earlier ambivalence about the importance of wearing masks.

Full statement from Bonnen:

“I have become increasingly infuriated by so-called advocates who are ditching the mask in the middle of a pandemic as an expression of freedom and liberty, while expressly killing the freedoms and liberties we cherish: The liberty and freedom to go to work. The liberty and freedom to have customers that keep you in business. The liberty and freedom of going to churches, restaurants and concerts with your family and friends. The liberty and freedom of sending your kids off to school. The liberty and freedom of a thriving economy for everyone.”

“If these so-called patriots persist in flaunting their disregard for others, we’re in for a very long, dark summer with a deadly array of medical and economic consequences — not because of government restrictions, but because these agitators have fueled uncertainty and fear within decent and responsible individuals who understand the health risks and the consequences of our medical resources being strained beyond capacity.”

“It’s time to mask up. It’s time to employ personal responsibility — a key tenet of ensuring liberty and freedom. It’s time to stand up to the mask naysayers who speak loudly but act irresponsibly as they destroy the liberty and freedom we ALL deserve.”

Researchers in England say they have the first evidence that a drug can improve COVID-19 survival: A cheap, widely available steroid reduced deaths by up to one third in severely ill hospitalized patients.

The results were announced Tuesday and the British government immediately authorized the drug's use across the United Kingdom for coronavirus patients like those who did well in the study. Researchers said they would publish results soon in a medical journal, and several independent experts said it's important to see details to know how much of a difference the drug, dexamethasone, might make and for whom.

But “bottom line is, good news,” said the United States’ top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci. “This is a significant improvement in the available therapeutic options that we have.”

The coronavirus outbreak has killed more than 438,000 people worldwide since it began late last year in China.

The study, led by the University of Oxford, was a large, strict test that randomly assigned 2,104 patients to get the drug and compared them with 4,321 patients getting only usual care.

The drug was given either orally or through an IV for 10 days. After four weeks, it had reduced deaths by 35% in patients who needed treatment with breathing machines and by 20% in those only needing supplemental oxygen. It did not appear to help less ill patients.

treatments are going to gradually improve...an argument for buying time (ie delaying deaths)

Bump...another recent post sharing positive news

Anyhow. I just went in for a test. Very easy to schedule at a clinic within walking distance of my house. I'm going up to Maine for a little R&R and Maine like many states wants to make sure visitors are not spreading the virus. Was happy to give up a little of my liberty and comply with their not unreasonable rules.

Sweden Tries Out a New Status: Pariah State

Fearing the country’s lax approach to combating the coronavirus, Sweden’s Scandinavian neighbors have all closed their borders to Swedes.

Every summer for the past 13 years, fans of Nordic culture have gathered on the Norway side of the border with Sweden for the outdoor festival Allsang pa Grensen, which translates roughly to, “Singsong Along the Border.”

But this summer, there will not be any Swedish singers in the live broadcast event, nor will there be any Swedish fans in the audience, singing and clapping along. This year, Swedes are forbidden to enter Norway.

And Norway isn’t the only Scandinavian neighbor barring Swedes from visiting this summer. Denmark and Finland have also closed their borders to Swedes, fearing that they would bring new coronavirus infections with them.

While those countries went into strict lockdowns this spring, Sweden famously refused, and now has suffered roughly twice as many infections and five times as many deaths as the other three nations combined

If this and hydroxychoroquine are effective treatments, why hasn't everything opened up? Why hasn't the NFL, NBA and MLB opened up? thethe says healthy athletes have nothing to worry about anyway. So with good treatments against something that's not much of a problem, why isn't everyone opening back up???

The reason why America isn’t recovering from COVID-19 as quickly as

other countries is because we are a country that values

individualism over collectivism. Nobody here wants to do anything

that is a minor inconvenience to them in order to protect their neighbors.

I cant tell if the focus on cases is stupidity or intentionally deceptive.

Either way, it's just irrelevant.

But if you were really worried about it, you should have probably not encouraged nationwide protests of 10s of thousands
