Around the League 2020 Edition

Sixto Sanchez- 7 IP, 10 K's today. If Philly doesnt re-sign JTR, that trade is going to look awful. Sixto is the goods.

JT's a top 2-3 catcher in baseball, he's really good. But if they dont end up re-signing him, going to look like a very very bad deal.

I think you are looking at it wrong. The Faillies sent the package they sent for two or whatever years JT had. It wasn’t contingent on if they resigned him or not. even if Sixto becomes an ace it wouldn’t change the deal at the time. The deal was made based on value of prospects compared to the value of JT at that time. Resigning him doesn’t affect the grade of the trade.

People get worked up on what happens after something happens. Yes you can have regrets but it doesn’t change anything.

Wasn't the deal one elite prospect (with some questions about longevity b/c of height) and a replacement level catcher with upside for 2 years of JT? I think that is a reasonable deal.

The issue is the Phillies suck and haven't done much with JTR. JTR has been great.

They traded Alfaro, DJ Stewart and Sixto for him. Phillies actually arent that bad, pretty solid rotation Wheeler/Nola/Arrieta/Eflin/Howard, lineup is good, bullpen is slightly better with the trades.

I think Sixto plus Alfaro plus stuff was a reasonable return for two seasons of a 5-6 win catcher plus the right to make a QO.

I'm not sure it was the wisest move for the Phillies given where their organization was at the time.

I will say though that the Phillies have largely managed their payroll advantage well. They've managed to move around pieces effectively and haven't "capped" themselves out.

But it is a case where maybe they didn't need to go acquire the cherry on top of the sundae when they did.

What is everyone talking about. They have a solid shot and winning it all this year. They had pieces in place to win a title and grabbing another elite player didn’t hurt their chances. Last year their pen was crushed by injuries. This year same but they patched it up. We will see how far that can take them but that was a great trade for them. I think it becomes harder for them as the years go on. Their minors are sort of bare. But they always money.

The AL Central might actually be good. The White Sox seem like they are ahead of schedule. The Indians keep trading away good players and it doesn’t seem to hurt them. The Twins are in third place and the Tigers are .500 today.

It's a good division. Twins and Indians are as expected but the White Sox have made some good moves lately and their young guys have really hit the ground running similar to the Braves a couple years ago.

Talk hitting on a couple of trades. Moncada for Sale and Jimenez for Quintana. Pure gold right now. Plus Luis Robert seems like he's the real deal too. They are going to be good for awhile.

Fernando Tatis, Jr. for James Shields was another good one.

our good friend Jason Heyward is playing good baseball offensively this year. Always liked him.

I think if the playoffs started today the 4-5 would be phillies and san diego. That would likely pit two of the media darlings against one another.

Tim Anderson is petty good though. Better then FTJ he is not. It would have been a great problem to have for Chicago. Something tells me they would have found ways to get them in the field/lineup together.

Always funny when folks mention the unbelievably lucky trades to make a point. The report on Tatis 11 months before he was traded was...

In their scouting report, MLB.com said, “Scouts like Tatis Jr.’s swing, his strong arm and his fluid actions on defense. He’s shown decent arm strength and raw power to his pull side. Tatis Jr.’s knack for barreling up balls and his repeatable swing have also impressed evaluators.” Jeff Buchanan of FutureSox wrote, “Tatis clearly doesn’t have the same upside as [White Sox top 2015 international signing] Franklin Reyes, but his well-rounded skillset, high baseball IQ and professional mentality mean he likely comes with less risk than Reyes and is a better bet to maximize his potential as a possible everyday player.”

What part of "potential everyday player" screams superfreak? Evaluators had him behind Franklin Reyes - whoever the *ell that is. FWIW, he was ranked #30 in that international signing class - well behind Moancada, Vlad Jr., Soto, and Pache.
