2020 Field

Runnin and I and plenty of other people think the stakes are exceedingly high in this election. Doesn't make us insane.

You and others see the candidates as meh, and the outcome of the election not a big deal. Doesn't make you crazy. I disagree but we are all entitled to our takes.

There’s quite a bit of room between thinking the stakes are high and comparing one candidate to Hitler, IMO...

Whoa Trumps influence continues to expand.

Hell i say the UNIVERSE will never recover!

I mean has expanded our military power to space now. And he's already mulled over nuking a hurricane. Won't be long till he wants to nuke Mars because it isn't red enough.

I've said my piece on that. Mussolini is the more apt comparison. But Weimar is not a ridiculous place to look for some parallels.

Keystone cops version of Mussolini is my historical analogy and I'm sticking with it.

Right? I mean one guy orchestrated a genocide and started a WW while on a volatile mix of drugs and alcohol leading to the death of millions.

One guy orchestrated some peace in the Middle East, reformed the tax system, tried to fight a new virus, and had to quell civil unrest because some ****ty cops were really ****ty that day and he tweeted a lot of dumb ****.

Same dude. For sure.

Runnin put up a tweet referencing an election held in 1933 that proved to be enormously consequential. From where I sit 2020 is enormously consequential too.

Compared to all the crazy things that get posted around here, I think that tweet is drawing a parallel that makes a fair amount of sense.

As has been pointed out before, Hitler did a lot of normal govt stuff, too. You're wrong for thinking that he was all that special. He did those things because he had the power to do them. Atrocities gets committed quite regularly, if you back up and view things from a bigger perspective. I think OO absolutely would commit atrocities if he had the opportunity and power, but I don't think that's all that uncommon. I lot of people would. OO, much more than others.

To be honest, I only posted it to troll sturg and the others. Mission accomplished.

But it is very relevant, as evidenced by the nerve it struck. If it were really bat **** crazy, no one would care. Some truths are a hard thing to deal with.

1) Muslim travel ban (overturned by the courts)

2) Separating children from parents as a deliberate policy tool to deter asylum applicants

3) Racialization of immigration policy (Norwegians vs us folks from ****hole countries)

4) Calling for the military to clear out peaceful demostrators

5) Throwing gasoline on volatile situations of civil unrest

6) Demanding DoJ investigate and prosecute political opponents

7) Seeking and accepting electoral help from foreign countries

8) The not-so-subtle racism (protecting suburbs from the ghetto)

All the other corruption and criminality.

This makes even less sense.

Then I sure hope we get it right! I don’t want literal Hitler 2.0 to box car our asses.

1933 is a pretty good analogy to 2020. Like any analogy it is not perfect. But crazy it aint.

I don't even want a keystone cops Mussolini. That's more than enough consequential in my book. The past four years have been bad enough. Basta!

Yeah you and Churchill. Two peas in a pod. In fact that’s what I think about when you post.... that guys just like a Winston Churchill.

Thanks. That means a lot. He's one of my favorite historical figures as well as one of my favorite writers and he'd be on my side in this argument.

He continues to stoke the fire in regards to social injustice. And that likely has directly or indirectly cost quite a few lives and will continue to do so in the future.

Is he Hitler? No, I certainly don't think so. And I don't believe Trump is creating violent racists right wing nut jobs across the country. Of course, I'd also argue that Hitler didn't really create Nazi's. He just organized them.
