Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

Can't win the World Series in January - even if it is the new December.

This team - even as it stands today - is good enough that it will still be in the mix when the trade deadline gets here, No bad contracts? Absolutely. Can't take advantage of someone stupid enough to try to win it all in January if you sign a couple of bad contracts now yourself.

This team as constructed is not good enough. We are good but there are way too many holes in the offense that our good hitters will have nothing to hit.

And hopefully we aren’t waiting for the trade deadline to fix an obvious hole we have now. Why wait to pay deadline prices when everyone is cheaper now.

Agreed. The Mets and Nationals have each gotten better, the Phillies are overall better as well.

On top of that, the Padres have gotten much better. If the Cardinals get Arenado, they will have gotten better. Makes it a much harder road to the WS than last year

have you always whined this much? sheesh.

uhhh you wanted to promise to let Joc play every day? face lefties? huge no thanks.

we don't have any LH starters in the division (hyperbole. Obviously Corbin and there are others. Just not many). His LH at bats are a small sample size.

Looks like the other option will be Josh Reddick, comargo, Markakis. If it secured good defense and a good hitter vs 80% of our starters for 7 million, yea I'd probably do it. Wouldn't do it in the playoffs he he continues to suck.

How do you value arenado? Rockies have to get "a haul" because of his name and he's a good player.

GMs look at that deal and see zero surplus value. Down year and you have to pay him a ton through age 35.

I assume GMs would have to be sold on Riley, Wright, Touki types. Tell themselves they got former high draft picks.

No matter how much Bridich wants and pleads for he is not going to get much of a return for Arenado. It mainly will boil down to how much money Rockies are willing to eat.

I agree. So is it better for them to save face, keep him, and then suck all year? Maybe he leaves and gets them off the hook?

Doubt they are going to eat a lot of money.

Probably just praying the Dodgers want him. They have all the money and they'll throw him their top 100 prospect that the dodgers know sucks. Then he can cover himself and say he made a good deal.

I wish there was any rumor that Turner would consider playing anywhere but LA.

Realistically, it probably makes more sense for the Rockies to seriously consider a trade. They do not have a good track record of signing and keeping their stars. They had Tulo signed long term, then traded him to the Jays. Signed Arenado, then immediately turned that relationship sour, possibly beyond repair. They signed Blackmon long term, now he is nearly untradeable. Word is they would like to sign Story long term. If I am Story, i'd have to seriously consider declining any extension offer until I test Free Agency (if he wants to win). Even though the market will be saturated with SS candidates, he will be at the top of the list.

In this case, if both Story and Arenado are likely gone after this season, cashing in on prospects is the only logical choice.

Morosi: Nolan Arenado trade talks between #Rockies and #STLCards have gained momentum in the last week, source confirms

Are the Nationals and Phillies really better this year than last year? In my opinion they've simply treaded water if anything. Both have serious holes that they haven't plugged, and depth will once again be an issue for both.

Nolan is not a realistic option in my opinion. We would be shopping the KB section if we go trade route.

Arenado is a much better option than Bryant at this point but it depends on how much the Rockies GM will eat. The more he eats in money the better prospects he gets in return. Obvious. Bryant is only the one year but less money and the draft choice next year adds value which all raise Bryants price.
