Looking Ahead - The 2020 Offseason Thread

At this point, all we have done is improve our rotation depth with Morton and Smyly. But we have taken a step back in the bullpen with the presumable losses of Melancon and Greene. Plus, we have presumably lost Markakis, Duvall. and more importantly, Ozuna,

So if AA stands pat, we go into spring training with a lineup of

Acuna RF
Albies 2B
Freeman 1B
TDA C
Riley 3B
Swanson SS
Inciarte CF
Pache LF

That lineup is a giant thud from the 6th spot down. Even the bench is weaker.

AA may not make a splash, but unless they think Waters is "ready" I find it all but impossible to believe Pache AND Inciarte will be starting. We haven't heard the first team connected to Duvall and/or Mazara yet, and they'd be an acceptable-enough platoon to keep Ender on the bench.

Is there any option to keep ender in FL after spring training?

Apologies in advance for linking to Enscheff's favorite site Talking Chop, but they brought up trading for Story instead of Arenado.

Wonder what you guys would be comfortable giving up for Story. He would be a 1 year rental, and is set to make $18.5 million this year. Probably would not come cheap obviously, and doens't seem like AA's style to give up pieces for a 1 year rental.

Dang I didn't realize Semien already signed too. Teams are snatching up quality options. Hopefully Ozuna comes back here on a nice short term deal, cause the pickens are getting slim. Starting to look like a Jay Bruce/Duvall combo might be the best option in LF. Puig is also available I guess.

Trade route is looking like the best remedy for a quality bat.

not huge upgrades for the Phils. there's basically one SS left for them to get, and he's the same guy they had last year.
the Braves have improved more than the Phillies this offseason. i'd say they have more than the Nats, too. Nats got a bunch of post-hype spare parts and Hand.

The Phillies aren't remotely a threat in the division. The Nats would need a ton to go their way.

I guess both could impact the division and the wild card race by being spoilers.

How about Dans straight up?

Ducking as things fly from all directions.

The problem with Story is a lot of his value is tied to being able to play SS. It’s hard to justify paying for a SS and then wasting that defensive value at 3b. Sort of like why Springer was never really an option.

There are several scenarios where the Rox can make the Arenado contract less awful. Simply kicking in cash based on whether or not he opts out is the easiest.

I don't like the idea of giving up one of our catching prospects for Story. I'd rather give up Riley. Can't get a good player for free.

I wish Blackmon didn't have two player options after this year. Taking that salary off of Colorado would be helpful, and he's still a solid player, but I don't want the next two years at 15 million plus.

what on earth makes you think AA will stand pat?

Now imagine if the NL gets the dh. Add Camargo to that lineup and yikes.

What do you think about giving them Dansby in the deal?

That's one of your bats and you're just forfeiting a year of control.

Could then get a draft pick out of it and plan on plugging in Shewmake or engaging in a still pretty deep SS market.

Heyman: Braves are among teams to check in on Justin Turner. No surprise, he has no shortage of suitors. Most still see Dodgers as heavy favorite for the longtime Dodger.

I think one of our bats needs to be either Ozuna, Cruz, or Turner. The other needs to be a lesser bat like JBJ or Rosario. But two bats absolutely need to be added or else our offense is going to be sputtering all season.
