GDT 5/22/21: Pirates vs Braves - A start for Ender

There are roughly 300 pitches thrown per game, or roughly 1 per 36 seconds.

No matter how many “yeah but, yeah but” comments you make, there is more dead time to fill in a football game than in a baseball game. And those announcers don’t do it by telling viewers how lame the modern nfl game has become.

Your defense is completely based on non-facts, and is horribly thought out.

You still haven't answered how many mins of actual ball in play in baseball? You won't bc it's microscopic. That's why when you listen to baseball games on the radio you hear all kinds of crazy **** to fill the dead time. That dead time doesn't exist in football. The play clock in football is when you have to run a play, but very rarely do teams take 35 seconds. You hear about who is being subbed in and color on the past play. You're a really smart guy, but you wrong on this

Keep moving the goalposts, a common tactic when someone has no actual argument to pose. How long is the ball in play in a football game? A few seconds per play?

Fact of the matter is nfl announcers fill in a lot of dead time, and they don’t do it by telling viewers how bad the modern sport is.

You brought up "7 mins of action"

This isn't the game or situation to use Matzek in? Snit will then complain to the media tomorrow that Matzek is unavailable if the bullpen blows a lead or prevents a comeback.
Save him for tomorrow if needed --especially with Monday being an off day.

Can we please stay on topic here - what's faster paced baseball or football? Haha

No need to move any goalposts - NFL games have 22 players actually DOING SOMETHING during those few seconds that the ball is "in play". Baseball has turned into watching 7 guys stand around on defense for the majority of a 3 hour game.

Nothing wrong with that for those who have acquired the taste - it's a lot like golf - doesn't change the fact that there just isn't much happening.

The baseball vs. football argument is interesting. In college football, a lot of teams run no-huddle in which they routinely snap the ball about 15 seconds into the play clock. It enables those teams to snap the ball at a number approaching 80 times per game. Double that and you're looking at least 150 plays between the teams. I don't have the stats but I'd guess the average MLB game has over 220 pitches. The difference is that a football play has a lot more happening every 20 seconds than does a baseball game which has a single pitch in that same amount of time (unless you're watching a four hour marathon between the Red Sox and Yankees).

I enjoy watching both and appreciate the differences. I'd be hard pressed to say one is superior to the other and both, obviously, have their share of "dead" time.

EDIT: I also agree completely with Scheff that I've never seen any college or pro football announcer biting the hand that feeds them by denigrating the sport they're broadcasting.

And even if baseball was 100% dead time to be filled by announcers, that dead time should not be filled with commentary telling viewers how bad the product is. That’s literally the last thing the voices of the product should be saying.

The “yeah but they have a lot of downtime to fill” defense is pretty weak, and doesn’t even make logical sense.

I love braves baseball over every sport, but it is slow paced. Miss state football, baseball, and basketball #2. Saints football #3. Grizzlies basketball #4. I like nothing else sports wise

You guys have allowed the logical fallacy red herring argument to change the point of contention.

The point being contended was “nfl announcers don’t have time to tell us how bad the game is because the sport is fast paced”.

I countered with the fact they have plenty of time to fill. Further, the amount of time needing to be filled is irrelevant because the salesman of the product should not be filling any dead time telling us how bad the product is.

Umm, fact of the matter is there are 7 minutes of total action. That’s a fact.

The rest of the 3 hours is commentators breaking down every play 2-3 times from various angles...and a million commercials.

As I said, they do a much better job filling in the gaps. So good that simpletons like you think it’s fast paced.

There's about 11 min of game play per game. So you are only off by about 36%. Thats just a fact.

There's also about twice as much commercial time in NFL broadcast against MLB. This is why the NFL makes a lot more money

Finally, NFL spends significantly more time on replays. As you might understand, a replay of an NFL play is much more interesting than a replay of a random pitch, and can be shown from several different angles

Glad I could help straighten up your facts

I love arguing with you, but I love the braves winning even more. I'll back out this one to enjoy the win by the braves.

Another clown who can’t keep the logical train on the rails.

The issue is not football action vs baseball action

The issue is whether or not baseball commentators should be filling the gaps in that action telling us how bad the sport is. Nfl commentators do not spend time doing that, and neither should mlb commentators.

Paid MLB announcers should stop trashing their own sport, agreed.

But old players talking about the game being unwatchable - while the sport is losing ton of fans - does not come across as ignorant to me.

Perhaps the powers that be should listen... the game is losing popularity. I'm 32 and am less interested then ever. The game is boring. Even home runs are boring. Its 5 seconds of action and a min of a dude jogging. Plus everyone does it, so its not even that special anymore.

Just my opinion... but this isn't a dinosaur being out of touch... the market is agreeing with the dinosaur narrative.... the game is losing interest

Yes, it’s a joy arguing with folks constantly falling back on common logical fallacies while thinking they are proving anything.

The sooner you follow through on your promise to leave, the better.

Then you can spend more time pretending to manage people and making yourself into an even fatter slob.

This is actually a really good point. Fans leaving isn't bc of the announcers, but the product

So in your head this is a binary thing? It’s either the product, or the announcers? Not some combination of both? That’s the limit of your ability to process things?

Disagree. It’s mostly about how the product is presented and marketed.

I can promise you that going back to 1970’s style of baseball isn’t going to bring fans back.
