The problem is the absence of any clue. The reason gas hit 1.98 was because of COVID. The supply smashed the demand and it took months to regulate it. In may 2019 the average gas price was 2.859. Given the general trend of gas prices being at 3 dollars last May would have been likely (gas tends to go up to a certain point before going down, Mid 3s seems to be the ceiling before companies ramp up production to lower prices)

Rental car companies are the biggest source of used cars on the market, but no rental car companies were buying inventory in 2020- most were selling. Hence in 2021 as people look to go back to commuting, you see a shortage of supply on the market and price increasing accordingly.

Also, isn't 2% inflation exactly what the fed (and most central banks around the world) has targeted for going on a decade now? Not sure we should be particularly concerned if/when they actually hit that target for some period of time.
