Selling At the Deadline

I don’t think it’d be that obscene - but it would hurt -
No question.
I am fully prepared to be mad as hell at what we have to unload to fix the Ozuna and bullpen mess -
It’s probably gonna be something like Wright, Tucker, Mueller, Shew, Waters, Arcia, Tarnok Shuster, Ed Harris

Hope to hang on to Wilson, Pache, Langliers (Especially) Vodnik (especially), Ynoa Michael Harris (especially) and de La Cruz - but mentally prepared to lose some of these also.

I don’t wanna ever see anything like the Texiera disaster - but our time is now. I wanna win for the next decade for sure - but we are gonna have to blow some heavy capital here.

Yes they did. Now we gotta fix it, and soon.
You want Jose Ramirez at third, Austin in left, Mitch Haniger in center and Acuna in RF- plus two elite RH relief arms?
And a legit shot at a few WS titles ? (Because our window narrowed- especially if we let Freddie walk)
That’s gonna blow the above listed farm to nuclear ashes .... but that’s what’s on the line.
Hope AA isn’t drinking as much as me these days...

I think we look to buy. Arizona listed on ESPN as potentially being ready to sell. They have some good minor leaguers and might be interested in getting some close to the majors prospects.

Marte and Peralta for Waters, Wright, Muller and V. Grissom.

Peralta can play LF while ozuna is suspended. Maybe DH.
Marte has played CF and SS. He could play OF this year and SS next year if Pache can hit at all.

The lineup would be sick. I'd hate to lose waters and muller, but I realize those guys won't be cheap

I just don't see Arizona trading Marte... I don't think we'll ever be willing to give up what it would take.

He was mentioned in the article as a trade piece. I would not be interested in him for much more than what we gave up.

he's a good player on a good contract. He's not a stud. He's had one really good year and a good start to this year. I'm not positive he's a 800+ OPS guy.

I think the idea would be for Zona to do a soft restart. They suck and have some bad money deals. Get some assets, move some money, ride out next year's work stoppage. Then have an exiting young team in 2023 and build for 2025 plus.

Marte is good, but he's not going to have them doing anything during his contract. Dodgers and Padres have that handled.

I’m all for making trades and improving the team via trading some of our assets but it’s all a pipe dream.
The Braves are capped out and we can’t add any payroll.
Best thing to hope for is this season to soon end and try to fill holes next season.
I’m really getting concerned we are on the verge of blowing our contention window since there is a 100% chance of the kids wanting new deals since we scammed them.
Try to get out of Ozuna’s deal, then use that money plus the money we put into smiley to get some bullpen help and a bench.
A real bench, not what we currently have which is an American legion bench.

It MAY be fine to do just that, but he's still going to have to sit down and clear the air about Freeman - whatever the situation actually is. I completely agree with those who question just how much the mood in the clubhouse and whether everyone is "having fun" contributes at the end of the day since you can't actually measure it, but even the numbers-guys will admit that those intangibles DO CONTRIBUTE. They're right to question just how much, but they don't deny that it's a factor on some level.

As bravesfanforlife points out we can all see a difference in Freeman's attitude, and it's carrying over into his performance and hurting the rest of the team - will fixing that give the team enough of a bump to play .600 ball for the month? Maybe - who knows? It's certainly worth a try (and I probably should've had that as my #1 priority since you can do that without spending a dime OR any prospect capital). You do that, hope Greene gives the pen the type of boost you're expecting, and then decide whether or not to panic in a couple weeks.

The reason I'm big on trying to get Frazier and Rodriguez is that I think you can do it with the level of prospects you describe - the Vodnik/Tarnok/Grissom/Franklin types that are pretty fringy guys in our system that might be Top 10 guys in theirs.

The air is he doesn't want to give Freddie the Goldy deal and is probably holding out for something shorter term.

The unfortunate thing is that AA's not really in a position to sell - Morton has struggled, Smith has been awful, the fanbase will likely revolt if you trade Freddie (regardless of the return and contract situation), so what can he do? He's also dealing with a recently-extended Manager who won't take kindly to being told to start playing the kids.

He's not likely going to listen to offers for Fried or Anderson, and those are probably the only players anybody's willing to overpay for that aren't named Acuna, Albies, or Riley.

While not "selling", it may well be time to push the timelines for Waters and Muller to start getting ready for this winter, bring Arcia up, and let opposing GMs know Panda and several others can be had for a song.

I know it's been pretty tough around here the past few weeks (or, I assume it has been—I've been on some equatorial islands during that time), but I have to think it's a complete pipe-dream to think Anthopoulos sells anytime in the next month (if at all). Beyond the whole contention-window concerns, the team is—despite all the mediocrity—only four games out of the division, with a lot of games left to play; moreover, as clv mentions, there isn't much major to deal off, outside of Freeman.

I suppose it's possible that Smith and Smyly and Morton and Martin all turn it around in the next month, and inflate their value enough to make them worth trading—but, if that happens, it's just as likely it catapults the Braves firmly into the "Buyers" category than coincides with more mediocre results and a "Sellers" deadline.

Guess we'll have to see.

We're in No Man's Land right now. It remains to be seen if this team is solid enough--especially in the absence of a healthy and productive Ozuna--to go on a roll to put themselves into playoff contention. I don't know what parts other teams might want. With our luck, Anthopoulos will move Smyly at the deadline and he'll turn out to be the World Series MVP.
