Race

A St. Louis couple who gained notoriety for waving guns at racial justice protesters last summer pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor charges and agreed to give up the guns they used during the confrontation.

In a statement Thursday, Mark McCloskey unapologetically defended his reaction to what he called “an angry mob” that “threatened” his family and home.

“The prosecutor dropped all charges against me, except for a claim that I put other people in imminent fear of physical harm,” he said. “That’s exactly what I did, that’s what the guns were for. And any time the mob comes and threatens me, I’ll do the same thing again to protect my family.”

I wish Mr. McCloskey the best in his senate campaign. If elected, he would be well-positioned to give Capitol Police some tips on how to deal with an angry mob.

White Republican men are basically afraid of everything because almost everything in modern life threatens their slippery hold on the wheels of power.

What a silly thing to say. You're too smart to believe that, that's some Joy Reid level of shallow thinking.

Agreed. Who are these specific people opposed to teaching kids the date that the slaves were freed, despite it being taught in my southern Appalachia backwater hillbilly elementary school 30+ years ago?

from the article:

Bank records reviewed by the Journal show thousands of dollars of Oath Keepers funds spent on goods and services near the town in Montana where Mr. Rhodes lived until recently, including at an auto-repair shop ($12,424), pet store ($83.50), dentist ($504), bar ($886), gun store ($9,974) and a lingerie and adult-goods shop called Alley Katz Nighties N Naughties ($229). The group also spent money on phone games ($275) and at an online perfume shop Fragrancenet.com ($256).

“He used that thing as a piggy bank,” said Ed Wilson, an Army veteran who managed information technology for the Oath Keepers in 2015 and said he alerted the board about spending. Mr. Wilson said he quit when he saw nothing was changing.

This common sentiment appears to have struck a nerve.
To be sure of making the point by invoking a woman of color who had absolutly nothing to do with the posters comment.

Cause hey, in certain circles Joy Reid is an applause line

Oh I didn't bring her up because of her race, I brought her up because she's a race hustler and one of the stupidest people with a blue check mark.

You might say I was judging her by the content of her character, not the color of her skin. But hey, you be you.

Ahh now I understand why you're upset...lookie where your nonsensical Juneteenth narrative came from

She is emblematic of the problem in the nation.

Absolute trash human being. Racism is very profitable for her.

Just pointed out it was telling and making my point your using her rather than any of her white male counterparts of MSNBC.

Who are to a " man" far more vocal and historically involved in progressive issues.
Coincidence. I guess

LOL, SHOCKED i tell ya.

On this day in 1964, a group of Black and Jewish leaders marched to the whites-only Monson Motel in St. Augustine, Florida. After arriving, a black preacher announced, “Now let us have prayer at this place. Let’s have prayer for the manager of this place. The manager interrupted. “You’re not having any prayer here,” he said. “You’re on private property, and I’m asking you to leave here.” He began pushing the Black preachers away. When White guests invited Black friends to join them in the swimming pool, the hotel owner, James Brock, poured acid into the pool. The photos and story ran in newspapers the next day around the world. That same day, the U.S. Senate passed the Civil Rights Act. “I’m not so sure the Civil Rights Act would have been passed had [there] not been a St. Augustine,” protester J.T. Johnson told StoryCorps. “We thought we’d done something — and we had.”

And thus began the era of racist swimming pools.

What an ass though, seriously.

Fortunately he was an idiot in addition to being an ass as that acid in a pool that large did pretty much nothing and no one was injured. What a moron.

The thing is, I think we can get near universal agreement that things like that were horrible and have no place in America. I just can't think of what we're talking about as being a modern parallel.

That dude would be locked up for a hate crime today, as he should be. That's due to the people who were in charge back then, most of them white, who were so disgusted by people like him that they changed laws to fix things.

Telling a bunch of white kids in elementary school that they're racist and privileged won't make things better. Neither will setting aside segregated areas in colleges where white kids can't go, or creating separate standards based on skin color.

I just can't think of what we're talking about as being a modern parallel.

Not an exact parallel, but we have recently had a president who:

1) promised to protect suburban moms from the bogeyman

2) encouraged cops to be rough with certain people

3) associated Mexicans with rapists

4) said a judge couldn't give him a fair trial because of his Mexican ancestry

5) expressed a wish for more immigrants from Norway and fewer from ****hole countries

6) in one of his first acts in office instituted travel restrictions on people of a particular religion

1. Like it or not, they're in the suburbs instead of the city for a reason. I'm in the exurbs for a reason. The higher likelihood of blacks committing crimes in urban areas doesn't make it racist to want to avoid the higher crime rates of the city.

2. With minorities? I genuinely don't remember.

3. Shortly after multiple highly publicized instances of repeat sexual assault offenders who were in the country illegally. I don't like the statements, but there was context that gets left out in the retelling.

4. Indefensible, but hardly throwing acid on someone.

5. You can look at it like it's a white country vs a brown country, or like it's wealthy, self sufficient immigrants vs poor immigrants who will add pressure to the safety net.

6. He wasn't the first, and it was in the wake of Arab Spring, Benghazi, and world wide terror attacks by Muslim extremists. He also talked about enhancing the background check on immigrants from those countries before removing the ban, but that part was also left out of the NYT/WaPo/CNN narrative. I still didn't like it, but it wasn't a bolt out of the blue and tons of context is being left out.
