Trades/acquisitions

Some under-the-radar help around the edges upgrades that might come relatively inexpensively in terms of prospects...

RP -
1.) Jose Cisnero, DET (2.83 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 49 Ks in 41.1 IP, 3.05 FIP, .65 HR/9) - Detroit's not going anywhere, so they'd probably be open to moving him. Making $970K, controllable through 2023.
2.) Ryan Tepera, CHC (3.02 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, 48 Ks in 41.2 IP, 2.88 FIP, 2.59 BB/9, .65 HR/9) - Obviously the Cubs are sellers, he's a free-agent this winter but only making $800K this year, and most teams will probably be focused on Kimbrel and Chafin.

SP -
1.) Michael Pineda, MIN (3.93 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 58 Ks in 66.1 IP, 4.30 FIP, 2.70 BB/9) - HR rate's a little high, but he doesn't walk anybody. The Twins would probably love to ditch his money and he's a pure rental - would certainly provide you a much better option than Wilson or Wright the rest of the way, and would free Ynoa up to be used in the pen as a long guy (meaning you could ditch Tomlin). There was an MLBTR blurb earlier that mentioned AA might be considering Cruz as a potential LF option since the prospect cost isn't assumed to be high (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/07/nelson-cruz-trade-rumors-twins-national-league.html) - if he has enough room to add what's due Cruz AND Pineda the rest of the way, Cruz/Pineda/Ynoa would be three pretty significant upgrades without giving away many prospects. The problem there is you may be looking at even worse defense than Ozuna in LF.

He was my #1 target if the NL had the DH for 2021. Not surprised the Rays covet him.

What would it take to get Duvall? In my mind, I don't think he'd be too expensive. I don't think he makes us a contender, but he gives us a shot without much risk.

Cruz is still slugging away at age 40 with no signs of slowing down. For someone who didn't get a fulltime job until 28 he has a small chance at 500 homers.

I don't get many right when speculating on minor leaguers. But man I wanted the Braves to go after Cruz hard while Milwaukee didn't ever give him a chance.

I'd be seriously pissed if the Braves traded anything of value for Gallo. You folks love you some Gallo though.

I think Joc pretty much takes the Gallo spot on the roster as the secondary LHH power bat. I’d be shocked if the Braves made a play for him.

Basically any actual MLB cOF that only costs a fringe prospect would be a good move. Now is not the year to spend big on upgrades to a very mediocre team.

Probably, slightly different description but if the Twins sell low on Kepler he seems like someone we’d be in on.

I’m all on board for the full blown sell, but at this point, I just want to deal Morton. He really could bring back an important long term piece in return. I really hope AA isn’t too shortsighted here.

Me too. I saw him play here in Nashville with the Sounds, on that stacked Brewers’ AAA affiliate. That team won the PCL and featured Cruz, Braun, Corey Hart, and Rickie Weeks. Prince Fielder had just been called up earlier that month as well.

Of note: former Braves legends Jeff Bennett and Kevin Gryboski were also on that team.

Let’s say AA goes out and gets Bryant or Marte, and TDA comes back to be a .750+ OPS bat.

Marte
Freeman
Albies
Joc
Riley
TDA
Swanson
Heredia

Is that lineup good enough to win the division if Anderson comes back and Ynoa can help out too?

I think maybe yes…

Not worth mortgaging the future over. If we want to try to contend for the division this year, they need to improve at the margins and then see what happens. Otherwise, maybe pick up a lottery ticket.

EDIT: I thought you said Marte AND Bryant. Marte shouldn’t cost a ton of capital, so that’s a move that I can get behind.

I think Whit Merrifield is a great player with a super cheap contract.

Merrifield
Albies
Freeman
Riley
Pederson
Darnaud
Swanson
Heredia
