Trades/acquisitions

This is the very definition of improving on the margins.

If all these are true:

1. Morton would retire rather than be traded.
2. Freeman will not approve a trade.
3. Swanson is going to be the SS in 2021.
4. The team has a 10% chance of making the playoffs.

Then selling isn't an option. Therefore, the only option remaining is to make cheap acquisitions to give lip service to the general fanbase that the team is "going for it".

A lot of dumb fans think Duvall is a great player, and they will no doubt be thrilled with this acquisition. In fact, we see posts here regularly lamenting the fact he wasn't a Brave already.

I hate to listen to the talk of ineffective with RISP and then turn around and emphasize the non-factor of Ks. Duvall just brings more of that present. I was hoping AJax could stick around and backup Lango or Contreras when the time came. Wasnt Rosario at the top of some lists here last winter before signing with Cleveland?

I see Duvall and Rosario as actual major league hitters. Not good ones but deserve to be in the big leagues. I just can't say that for Heredia or even Almonte (yet).

I know these deals aren’t huge but getting Joc, Duvall, and Rosario for basically Ajax and Bryce Ball is pretty awesome. Peterson has been pretty clutch so far

I wasn't advocating that. I'm just saying picking up Thing 1 and Thing 2 doesn't do a whole lot for me. Casual fans will look at HRs and RBIs and think we stole these guys when they were both sitting on the curb with a "Free" sign on them.

Exactly....and based on what I am reading on Reddit and Twitter, it's working. I actually got downvoted by saying these acquisitions (plus others made today) have actually decreased our playoff odds.

Braves will owe Duvall about 3.6 million for 2 months of service at minimum. He was looking to make north of 5 million if he had gone to arbitration this year.

Duvall has an odd contract. It's for $5 MM, but it was for $3 MM this year with another $2 MM prior to next season. It's almost like the Marlins knew they were going to unload him and saddle the acquiring team with the deferred portion of the contract.

Is a Joc/Duvall platoon worth $17m next year?

Pricy but think it would a very effective platoon

Coming into 2021 I would say absolutely. But both have struggled against the part of the platoon they are supposed to dominate in. Pederson has a 90 WRC+ against RHP this year. Duvall has a 69 WRC+ against LHP this year. Surprisingly both have been better than league average against their weak side. Is this a fluke? A sign of things to come as they are getting older? I don't want to spend 17 million to find out. Maybe there is data to suggest they have been unlucky (and im too lazy to look it up right now) and they should still produce like one would imagine.
