Ukraine

You can't make an omelet without breaking a few Anna Politkovskayas. (link)

Weird. Obama hasn't assassinated any of our journalists, and he's called a ruthless communist fascist dictator.

I remember reading about that stuff when I was 13-14 in high school and kids asking me who the hell was that and why I cared about it... then recently when Putin got rid of term limits, they texted me about it.

Right. Because letting Ukraine into NATO would've been the reason Putin wouldn't send troops into Crimea, a predominantly ethnic Russian area. Putin is mad, and he would've found an excuse to do it either way. If a western-style President was elected, then Crimea would still be crying like they are now.

Also, this Russian invading Ukraine thing has only gone on for 2-3 days while the Ukraine protests have gone on for months. Are you really going to say he's weak based off these 2-3 days?

You don't win a chess match in the 2nd move of the game unless your opponent falls for the 2 move kill.

No, he wouldn't. That is war declarable action by law something he would not do for many reasons.

He's using the excuse that they're protecting Crimean's right now from the Ukraine army, why wouldn't he do it again?

He doesn't give a crap about Crimea, he's using it as a political ploy to show Moscow's muscle. Would have happened with or without NATO.

you mean making Star Wars again?

Or the Cold War starting up again?

I agree with you.

This is Obama's moment to shine, he better not shat it away this time.

Eh. If we walk out of this with nobody hurt, the right will just criticize and say he should've killed or removed Putin to prevent any further atrocities or crisis'.

A bit tongue-in-cheek, yes.

In 2014, global interest in US 'aid' usually begins and ends with our checkbook -- not our knowhow or ideas, sadly.

One of the more comedic moments of the Bush presidency was when Dubs proclaimed that he'd looked into Putin's eyes and seen his soul.

I see it too.

...

That's just the thing about Russia. Brutality/sentimentality. There is something quintessentially Russian about this (link), for example.

I will say this. If not for the murdering and the invasions and the oligarchy and crackdowns on dissidents I would absolutely LOVE the guy. Seriously.

And they would be idiots/morans.

Diplomacy with teeth is the best option. Like you said, he is playing chess, but those Russians are masters at chess, so his next move is crucial.

I agree. Ultimately it comes down to the fact that no one is going to start WWIII over Crimea and the Ukraine so Putin can do what he wants. I'll be interested in seeing if this move snowballs any time soon into claiming another territory.

- John Kerry

Don't we do this all the time?

The bad news is that world war 3 is comin.* The good news is that our allies like us slightly more. Good job Obama.

I vote we take the isolationist approach on this and watch from the upper deck as Russia curb stomps eastern Europe.

* No goldfly, I really don't think WW3 is coming.

Lol. Thanks for that laugh.

Or maybe it's time for Western Europe to get off their dead asses (sorry, I think arse is so pretentious) and do something about their own backyard.

Adding a country every other year or three to the provisional list of EU-membership consideration isn't "doing something"?

Sheesh: you just can't please some people.

If only Jack Bauer were in the Ukraine and not in London, this all could be avoided.
