Around the League - 2021 Szn

Love it.

I guess I'm a bad liberal, not nearly as amped about PC **** as others. Celebrate differences, enjoy each others' diversity, but enough with being pissed off about every damn thing. Life's too short.

I'm the same way. I'm a proud progressive who wants to do right by people, but there's enough **** out there that's actually happening to tear down our republic to spend this much time worrying about a chant. If I had my way, I'd probably drop the "S" and rename the team "The Atlanta Brave." Turn tomahawks into hammers to honor the Home Run King. **** like that. But I'm not gonna lose sleep over it.

Should tribes include their name on casinos? Will the next generations see Native Americans as just gamblers. How does being associated with gaming uplift people other than monetarily?

Everything in life can be considered offensive if you look hard enough.

I would say that celebrating a home run with a chop doesn’t do any more harm to a community than creating a narrative that a community only survives off gambling.

That is a completely different discussion. Plus, no one who has any knowledge whatsoever of how it is on a reservation thinks that a community only survives off gambling. Hell, many of the locals in Cherokee hate the casino because it closed so many small businesses.

I’ve always been a fan of the throw back Black Cracker uniforms. Rename the team the Black Crackers. Showing respect to the Negro Leagues might be good for a city with a divided past.

If being the name of a team is demeaning and degrading then I suggest we change the team's name to the Atlanta Manfreds.

WTF? Seriously, WTF? There are layers to how ****ed up this is, and it is this kind of thing that just makes me wish the Braves would change their name, drop the tomahawk, and move on from the chop. Native Americans still exist. Still exist on reservations. Still aren't like the twisted pulp culture stereotype that teams like the Indians, Braves, Chiefs, and Redskins profited from. This is why stuff like the Braves issue DOES hurt. And, if you haven't been paying attention, several Native American organizations representing thousands of Natives have come forward in opposition of the name, of the chop, and of the tomahawk. It is beyond time to move the **** on from this ****.

Who said they dont exist anymore or that they are like they are shown in pop culture? White people aren't the caricature that the Cowboys mascot is. The Yankees is a refrence to people. The fighting Irish. The Ragin Cajuns. Etc. All they have accomplished in ceting about this **** is turning people who had a generally positive view of current Native Americans to a very negative view of them. I now personally donr give two ****s about them. If they want to stop actual damage done to them maybe they should ban alcohol on their reservations.

Cant wait for 50 years from now the Dolphins will be a taboo name because they are really smart and someone will find a way to teach them to be offended.

Folks crediting Coppy with the success of the current team are the exact same people who always prove to be wrong on every topic we discuss around here.

We are beyond lucky to have AA steering this ship.

Seriously. I was dubious of AA at the start but he's pulled off some phenomenal deals. Getting Morton was absolute genius and he's managed to consistently acquire pieces without giving up players of value.

It’s an amazing “what if” to imagine what the Braves roster would have looked like this year if Coppy was still around. AA has really never made a signature trade with the Braves and Coppy was the type to trade for the sake of trading.

I don't think we have any idea what Coppy would have done with a winning core.

Anthopolous has managed his inherited situation very well. Coppy may have blown it, but we don't know. He never got to the point where he was trading prospects so who knows?

When you make the kinds of trades AA made at the deadline, you should never be in a position where you have to make "signature trades". It's probably fair to say he made 5 "signature trades" at this year's deadline - signature trades get confused with impact trades way too often. The names aren't the important part, and we (me included) often get entirely too tied up in that part.

Regardless of who was available, Alex couldn't possibly have traded for 5 guys that impacted this team more than the 5 he traded for in 2021.

This.

Unless you have Native-American heritage, what *ucking business do you have throwing your two cents in?

I don't, and if it's a non-issue for the majority of those who do, there's absolutely no reason for me to join in the discussion - there are plenty of other things that actually deserve my attention.

Stay the *uck off of Facebook and Twitter and you'll enjoy life a *elluva lot more..

My guess is he would have made a couple ill-fated long term signings that make the Will Smith and Ozuna deals look like bargains.

AA's biggest strength has been adding impact talent while taking on very little risk. We are starting to see that erode as the pressure to win builds though.

Do you think there's more pressure for him to repeat than there was before a week and a half ago?

I have a feeling he'll be even more conservative to try and stretch out this window as much as he can.

Agree with the first paragraph, and the first sentence of the second paragraph. Not sure we’ve seen any evidence yet of that final line, however.

Not sure how anyone other than him can answer that, but we'll probably be able to decide which way he's leaning strictly based on what happens with Freeman.

If he could add Rizzo AND Marte with the same amount of money and spend what a couple of the OFs would cost (plus Martin's money) on fortifying the rotation and pen it'll be fairly obvious that HE thinks the pressure to hang at least one more flag (in the next few years) is there. If one flag is enough, giving Freddie whatever he wants and bringing as many OFs back as possible so the typical fans get what they want would help eliminate a lot of stress for him for a while - he gave the fans what they wanted.

We currently have one of the worst TV deals in all of baseball. So if AA can penny pinch until we get that sweet new tv deal with all that influx of cash we'll be in good shape to finally sign some S-Tier free agents.

It was reported a few years ago that the TV contract was renegotiated and it was firmly league average (at the time).
